SUNSET II (Open Summer Tournament, SWAMP, 8/24)

I am happy to announce SUNSET II, an online tournament on Saturday, August 24th. This is a mirror of SWAMP, a HS regular difficulty housewrite set. I, Andrew Gao, will be the tournament director.

This is an open tournament, meaning teams need not consist of players from the same school. All players must be in the class of 2024 or younger, however.

WESTERN and INTERNATIONAL players/teams are strongly encouraged to play SONNET unless they have a conflict, in which case they are welcome to play SUNSET II. Players/teams who are interested in this mirror but cannot attend due to a conflict will be allowed to play SONNET even if they don’t meet the region criteria.

Registration
The team formation sheet is located here. Teams MUST email me at [email protected] to formally register.

Staffers will be paid $25 for staffing the whole tournament. Staffers should preferably be ineligible to play the tournament. The staffer form is here.

Team registration will close on Thursday, August 22nd at 3:00 PM ET.

Rules
Rosters are capped at 6 players, though only 4 players may play at once. Players are expected to follow NAQT gameplay rules (with timing + other small modifications) and PACE's Honor Code. Active players must show TWO HANDS on camera. Any suspicions of cheating will be investigated and may be reported to quizbowl organizations.

Format
The field is capped at 16 teams but may increase with sufficient interest and staffers. All teams will be guaranteed 8 games. We will use 20 tossups and 20 three-part-bonuses per untimed round. 15-point “powers” and negative-5-point “negs” are in play. There will be no computational math.

Games will be played on Discord, with Buzzin.live for buzzing. Each individual player must have their own Discord account to join the tournament server. An account can be made here.

Fees & Discounts
Base fee: $80 per team or $20 per player or free agent
Late fee (not fully paid by August 31st, a week after the tournament): +$20 per team
Shorthanded (1-2 players) discount: -$20 per shorthanded team
Staff discount: -$25 per staffer
There will be a minimum fee of $0 per team. Teams who cancel after Tuesday, August 20th must pay the full fee, barring extenuating circumstances.

Teams will receive a confirmation email after registering. Payment info will be contained within, and teams are expected to pay via Venmo, PayPal, or check in a timely manner. Teams with unusual payment situations or in need of financial assistance should contact me before registering at the email below.

Stats & Prizes
Team and individual stats will be posted on hsquizbowl.org within 24 hours. There will be live stats up to the game with my Live Stats Hub, and category/subcategory stats.

Misconduct
Anyone involved with the tournament, including but not limited to: coaches, players, staff, tournament directors, and spectators will adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Misconduct can be reported to this form and/or sent to my email below.

A few notes:

First and foremost, I would like to thank Ryan Smith for stepping up with only a few days' notice to handle the day-of tournament director responsibilities. Also, thanks to Arjun Vivekraj, Avnith Kumar, and Abigail AuYeung for staffing!

The tournament wouldn't have been possible without the teams too! Basque Potato, a solo team consisting of just Grady Noble, won the tournament by clearing the field with an 8-1 record. Grady was also the top scorer, followed by Sophia Jones (Montgomery Blair). Congrats to the players!

This was a mirror of SWAMP, a set I had the privilege of head editing. The set is still open to mirrors through the end of the calendar year 2024 to any interested hosts! Tournaments may be online or in person, open or closed, for high schoolers or not, etc.—I am very flexible as the mirror window is ending.
