ANNOUNCEMENT: Dennis Haskins Open (3/1/08) at UT-Chattanooga

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

You are invited to UTC’s 11th annual Trevor’s Trivia: Bob Selcer Memorial High School Quizbowl. Named in honor of the actor and UTC alumnus best known as Principal Belding on Saved by the Bell, this will be a one-day team academic quizbowl competition in Chattanooga on Sat., March 1, 2008.

The field is open to high school and middle school teams, but limited to 45 teams. To ensure that you have space reserved, we recommend that you e-mail utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com at your earliest convenience with the number of teams your school expects to bring.

FORMAT: This will be an untimed tournament with 20 tossups and bonuses per round, with no bounceback on bonuses. Questions will cover a variety of academic disciplines, with a little popular culture and general knowledge thrown in. The field will be split into brackets for a round robin, followed by playoffs for each division. During playoffs, non-playoff teams will have the option of playing consolation rounds.

ELIGIBILITY: By popular demand, we have made some adjustments to our eligibility rules since last year. Students in grades 6-12 are eligible. Those in grades 11-12 are eligible to play in Division I only. (Exceptions may be made for players in 11th grade with no prior quizbowl experience, but only at the tournament director's discretion.) Students in grades 6-10 are eligible to play in either Division I or Division II. However, these questions are targeted at the high school level, and we strongly recommend that players in grades 6-8 play on Division II teams only. Separate trophies will be awarded for teams in Division II (teams composed entirely of players in grades 6 -10.) It is unlikely, but possible, that Division II teams may still play some matches against Division I teams. There will also be separate individual All-Star awards for players in grades 6 -10, even if they’re on a Division I team.

SCHEDULE: Registration begins at 9 AM Eastern time on Sat. 3/1 with announcements at 9:45 and play starting at 10. While we won’t have a precise schedule until we verify the field size, we expect to finish the round robin by 6 PM, followed by an exhibition “trashâ€

Due to unavoidable scheduling conflicts, we just couldn't make an overnight trip work on the weekend of March 1. We hate it, though; UT-C is always one of our favorite tournaments every year.

We'll be there in the fall.

Haskins field officially full

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

At the moment, the field for the Dennis Haskins Open High School Quizbowl is officially full, and registration is closed. We are trying to secure two additional rooms, in which case we can handle two more teams in Division I (varsity) and one more in Division II (JV). Also, based on past experience, there are almost always a few cancellations within the week before. If you would like to put your team on the waiting list, please e-mail us ASAP at utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com. Thanks.

RESULTS:Dennis Haskins Open (3/1/08) at UT-Chattanooga: date

Post by Your Genial Quizmaster »

The eleventh annual Dennis Haskins Open High School Quizbowl was held at UT-Chattanooga on Sat. 3/1/2008. Congratulations to the winners:

DIVISION I (varsity)
1st: M.L. King Magnet School A
2nd: Ezell-Harding B
3rd: Brindlee Mtn. (AL) A
4th: Brindlee Mtn. (AL) B

DIVISION II (junior varsity):
1st: Ezell-Harding B
2nd: Ringgold (GA) B
3rd: Hume-Fogg B
4th: M.L. King Magnet B

Further results and stats follow below, but first there are a lot of people to thank.

From their inception, UTC’s high school tournaments have received tremendous support from current and former quizbowl players from other universities. We remain deeply grateful for these volunteers; for Haskins 2008, special thanks to Dave Leach, Stephen Taylor, John McCollum, and Eileen Steinhice. Thanks also to the volunteer readers from participating high schools: Kay Campbell from Lincoln Co., Steve Sessis and Mike Taylor from Daniel Boone, Ruth Jackson from Ringgold, and our backups on call (Nancy Howell & Ms. Padgett) from M.L. King Magnet.

But I’m especially proud that (counting myself) there were an unprecedented eighteen current or former UTC students serving as officials at this year’s Haskins. Thanks to house readers/scorekeepers Toni Van Winkle, David and Rachel Moore, Wally and Shannon Edmondson, John Kilby, Nikki Poarch, Ashley Rousselle, Jacob Vannucci, Jimmy Beilstein, the aforementioned Ruth Jackson, Yolanda Fernandez, Tiffany Willis, Edward Henderson, Rishabh Shah, Shane Sawyer, and Dren Rollins. Special thanks to Nikki and Rachel for their versatility in running logistics, keeping stats, and also officiating as needed.

The questions for the Dennis Haskins Open were produced in a collaborative effort with Drake University and the University of Oklahoma as an outgrowth of this year’s Sword Bowl. Thanks to the respective crews at Drake (Stephen Wise, Brendan Byrne, Derek Olson, Ben Urick, Phil VerBeke, and Dan Weflen), Oklahoma (David John Gagne II, Brian Morrow, Chris Terrill, Matt King, Cliff Marroquin, Tony Hayes, Ted Swang, and Emily Duda), and UTC (David Moore, Shane Sawyer, John Kilby, Jacob Vannucci, and Rishabh Shah) for their writing & editing services. Thanks also go to Dave Leach, Jeremy Hixson, Stephen Taylor, and Stephen Webb for editorial assistance; to Sword Bowl packet contributors from Bevill State Community College (Glenn Allen Bobo, Mason Portzer, Jonathan Mitchell, Patrick Kilgore, Evan Underwood, Nick Powell, Julia Hosmer, J R Tidwell, Daryl Phelps, and Hannah Goode); Georgia Tech (Taylor Kulp); Shorter College (Whitney Richert and Chuck Pearson), and Wake Forest (Jacob Bathanti and Ross Williford). Thanks also for freelance contributions from UT-Knoxville’s Scotti Whitmire and Markus Iturriaga; UCLA’s Tirth Patel, Chris Ngoon, and Seema Ullal; South Florida’s Ahmad Ragab; Bryan Roper of Virginia Tech; Daichi Ueda of Walter Johnson HS (Bethesda, MD); Eric Huff et al. of Dorman HS (Roebuck, SC); the aforementioned Jeremy Hixson; Shawn Pickrell, Brice Russ, Brian Hight, and Michael Kearney.

Note: We would love to have discussion online of these questions. However, our friends at Oklahoma have had to postpone their mirror event till late April. So please, if you have any comments on the questions, don’t discuss specifics for the time being.

And as always, thanks to Dennis Haskins himself for his continued support for this event, and for sending a welcoming message as well as autographed Saved By the Bell photos for the winners and all-stars.

RESULTS

A record 44 teams competed, representing 23 schools. We apologize to all for the buzzer issues, and the resultant delays –- for those who weren't there, we had exactly enough buzzers available to cover the 20 rooms needed, but two didn’t work at all and two more conked out during the day, requiring a lot of schedule juggling and several rooms of “slap bowl.” Special thanks to Wally Edmondson, Steve Taylor, and John Kilby for extended service in “slap bowl” matches, which went more smoothly than we had any right to expect.

We had 28 teams split into four brackets in Division I, and 8 teams in two brackets in Division II. This meant each bracket had a seven-round round robin, followed by playoffs for the top teams.

Full results through the round robin, as well as full individual stats, can be found online at:
