SONIC (TSE MS #1, Online, 5/4)

Del Norte Quizbowl is proud to announce our first annual Super Obscure Nighthawk Invitational Competition (SONIC), an online middle school tournament! SONIC will be held on May 4th, 2025, and will be co-directed by Aditi Bandaru, Maryam Abdul-Aziz, Anish Degalmadikar, and Jacob Wu. Our advisor is Erin Persil.

QUESTIONS:
This tournament will be played on the TSE MS #1.

LOGISTICS:
This tournament will take place on Discord through VC. All players are required to join the server. Players’ cameras must remain on, with one hand showing during tossups and two hands showing during bonuses.

SCHEDULE:
Check-in will begin at 7:00 am PST, and rounds will start at 8:00. There will be an all-team meeting around 7:45, where brackets will be shared. The tournament should end around 4 pm PST.

FORMAT:
Teams can have up to six players per team, although only four can play at any given point in a match. Substitutions can be made at halftime in each game. This is a closed tournament, meaning teams must consist only of players from the same school.

The tournament will adhere to the official NAQT rules with the exception that each round will run as two untimed halves with ten toss up-bonus cycles in each half. Computational math questions will NOT be skipped. 5/5/8 timing will be used.

Depending on field size, this tournament will be split into two brackets. Rebracketing will occur after lunch.

ELIGIBILITY:
SONIC will be open to all middle school teams, but preference will be given to Southern California teams. Eligibility is subject to the tournament director’s discretion.

PRICING:
$90 for the first team and $80 for each additional team

Payment must be provided online via Venmo @Charlotte-Wu-10 BEFORE the tournament begins. If we don’t receive your payment before the tournament, you will not be able to play. Exceptions can be discussed via email. If you don’t have Venmo, please email us for information regarding sending a check. Teams can request an invoice by emailing [email protected].

DISCOUNTS:
- $10 per competent staffer who provides their own device

Minimum fee: $60

Registration will end on Thursday, May 1st. Teams that register after this date will have to pay a late fee of $10. Any teams that drop less than 24 hours before the tournament starts will still be required to pay fees.

There will be a soft 16-team field cap for the tournament.

MISCONDUCT:
Misconduct, including harassment and cheating, will not be tolerated at this tournament — all players, coaches, and spectators will be held to the PACE code of conduct. Any incidents should be immediately reported to staff or through the anonymous misconduct form.
