Belmont Quizbowl is excited to announce the third iteration of our annual Belmont Winter Tournament, an in-person tournament on Saturday, December 14th. The tournament will be held at Belmont High School, 221 Concord Avenue, Belmont, Massachusetts 02478. There is on-site parking and an MBTA bus stop in front of the school. All high school and middle school teams from New England and beyond are invited to attend!

We will be running a single division on NAQT IS-234A, a set slightly easier than high school regular difficulty.

This tournament will be a qualifier for the NAQT HSNCT, meaning the top 15% of teams (rounded up) will qualify for quizbowl nationals! Additionally, this tournament is a PACE qualifier, meaning the top 20% of teams will qualify for the National Scholastic Championship in June.

Registration & Fees
Teams should register by December 11th @ 3:00 PM ET using this form. Staffers may register here. All staffers will receive free lunch and compensation (in the form of community service hours, a staffer discount for a team, or a $25 payment).

Base fee: $90/team or $70/new team (has not played pyramidal quizbowl since 9/1/2022)
Buzzer discount: -$5 (limit 1 discount)
Travel discount: -$10/100 miles one-way, as determined by Google Maps
Staff discount: -$25/staffer
There is a minimum fee of $0 per school.

Teams who cancel after December 11th @ 3:00 PM ET must pay the full fee, barring extenuating circumstances. Teams are expected to pay within a month of the tournament via Venmo, Zelle, cash, or check. Payment info will be provided in invoices sent in the registration confirmation email.

The form will ask for a pizza order ESTIMATE. Actual pizza orders will be taken through a separate form sent out in a pre-tournament logistics email.

Rules
Rosters are capped at 6 players per team, but only 4 players may play at once. We will use NAQT gameplay rules with some modifications (e.g. untimed rounds). Teams must be composed of players from the same school (i.e. no "chimeras" or open teams) and from the class of 2025 or younger.

Format
The field will be capped at 24 teams. We expect this to fill quickly, so register soon!

Check-in will be from 8:20 AM to 8:50 AM. The tournament will start around 9:00 AM and end around 6:00 PM. Teams will be guaranteed at least 8 games. We will have rounds of 20 tossups and 20 three-part-bonuses. 15-point powers and negative-5-point interrupt penalties (“negs”) are in play. There is no computational math. We will have live stats (up-to-the-game).

Prizes
The winner of the tournament will receive a trophy. Top scorers will receive a panda sticker and/or a book prize.

Conduct
Anyone involved with the tournament, including but not limited to: coaches, parents, players, staff, tournament directors, and spectators must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct and the NAQT Honor Code. Misconduct should be reported to this form and/or sent to [email protected].

Contact
Please direct questions to [email protected]. We hope to see your team in Belmont at the end of the year for our winter tournament!

The field cap has been raised to 32 teams! Registered teams should have received a logistics email—please let me know if you expected to receive this email but didn't.

Team registration is still open until this Wednesday at 3:00 PM ET. Staffers are also wanted!

The tournament went wonderfully today! As per usual, a special thanks to all our players, teachers, coaches, parents, staffers, etc. for attending and making this possible.

I would like to recognize all of our staffers—thanks to: Kenner Bailey, Mabel Chen, Esme Chen, Noah Chin, Tanner Eustace, Lorraine Glowczak, Julian Halpern-Smith, Colin Heydt, Luca Hu, Jaise King, Alison Langsdorf, Nick Pruitt, Ishan Ranjan, Daniel Sheffield, Adam Silverman, Elissa Tian, Sarah Wilson, Jeffrey Wu, Albert Ying, Bri Yueh, Gregory Zeldovich, Will Zhang, and John Ziegler.

Lexington won without a final, clearing the field with a perfect 10-0 record! Westwood A (4-1 in Superplayoffs) finished second, Conard (3-2) third, Mansfield A (2-3) fourth, Charlemont Academy (1-4) fifth, and Westwood B (0-5) sixth. All of the teams just listed will qualify for the 2025 PACE NSC, and the first five of those teams will also qualify for the 2025 NAQT HSNCT. Additionally, Charlemont Academy and Weston qualified for the 2025 NAQT SSNCT.

Our top individual scorers were: Jasper Xu (12), Ivan Harder (11), Charles Heydt (12), Alvan Hossain (10), Rishi Pendyala (12), Nathaniel MacDonald (9), Shishir Bharadwaj (10), Peter Mahowald (9), Ben Rosenfeld (10), Aritra Ghosh (12), Mason Bragdon (10), Christian Watson (12), Eric Liu (7), Ulises Shah (8), William Sartor (12), Nick Davenport (11), William McBrine (10), August Kim (12), Jacob Cicerchia (10), and Alex Ng (10).

Full stats and placements from the tournament are available here and on NAQT here. Because we ran an NAQT question set, there will unfortunately be no category stats.

I hope to see all teams soon for our next tournament, BEST II on Saturday, February 15th, 2024. This will be running the fantastic regular difficulty housewrite SHOW-M3.

Good luck to all teams for the rest of the season and happy holidays!
