Cavalier Classic XXVII

Post by Sit Quietly, Alone »

The Academic Competition Club at UVA, in collaboration with St. Anne's-Belfield School, will be hosting our annual fall tournament, the Cavalier Classic, on September 28th, 2024 using NAQT IS-231. The tournament director will be me, Joseph Chambers. We will not use computational math tossups nor bonuses at this event.

Location: This tournament will be held at the Upper School of St. Anne's-Belfield School at 2132 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA. They're gracious hosts with plenty of rooms and plenty of parking space, as you'll see. Staffers will still primarily be members of the Academic Competition Club at UVA.

Timing: Checkin will begin at 8:30am, with the opening meeting at 8:55 and play beginning at 9:00. The tournament will most likely run to ~6:00pm.

Parking: St. Anne's-Belfield has a large parking lot that is free to use on weekends.

Qualifying: The top 15% of the field will automatically qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, which will take place this year over Memorial Day weekend in Atlanta, GA. More information about HSNCT can be found here. The top 20% will automatically qualify for the PACE National Scholastic Championship (NSC). More information about NSC can be found here.

Team size: There can be a maximum number of 6 players on each team’s roster, with substitutions possible at half-time and between games. If you wish to bring 7 or 8 players, we ask that you register a second team and so on for anyone with larger numbers of players.

Food: There are several restaurants within immediate walking distance of the school, including pizza, barbecue, and Central American fare. There is also a large concentration of restaurants at the nearby Barracks Road shopping center, a 2-5 minute drive from the school.

Field: The soft cap for this tournament is 24 teams. We reserve the right to increase the field pending room and staff availability.

Fees/Discounts:
Base fee: $100 per team
Buzzer discount: $5 for each system on which the control box and 8 buzzers work.
Staff discount: $20 for a competent moderator. The Academic Competition Club reserves the right to decide which moderators to accept for the discount.
Travel discount: $10 for each team at least 100 miles away from St. Anne's-Belfield School, as determined by Google Maps.
Minimum fee: $40

Payment: We can accept payment in Venmo (preferred), Zelle, cash, or check. Checks should be made out to “Academic Competition Club at UVa.” DO NOT make checks out to the University of Virginia. DO NOT make checks out to St. Anne's-Belfield School. Please pay either in advance or on the day of the tournament. If you wish to pay in advance, please indicate this on the registration form and I will send you an address. All teams will be sent an invoice after we receive their registration. The Academic Competition Club can provide invoices and W-9s as needed.

Registration: To officially register for this tournament, please visit the registration page at NAQT.com. If your school has registered and would like to change any details of your registration, or if you have any questions concerning the tournament, please email me at [email protected].

We've hit the 24-team cap! Feel free to email me at the address above if you're intent on registering any further teams, but it looks like 24 is the number. We look forward to seeing you on the 28th.
