Illiac Two at UCLA (ITU); February 17th!

Post by FJOIII »

Howdy folks! We over here down in the wonderful world of Westwood want to welcome y’all to ILLIAC Two at UCLA (or ITU, pronounced “It You” for those interested in keeping a spirit of whimsy to tournament naming conventions). We’ll be throwing this shindig on Saturday, February 17th.

The tournament will take place on the UCLA campus, with the exact location (and with it, parking recommendations) TBD. The opening meeting will begin at 8:45 AM, with games starting at 9:00 AM sharp. I, Frederic O’Hara, will be the tournament director. Any questions, comments, or concerns about this tournament can be sent to me at freddieoharaiii AT gmail DOT com!

Difficulty
ILLIAC at UCLA will be hosted on (you guessed it) the ILLIAC II question set. This is a “2 dot” set, which is meant to be playable (though very difficult) for relatively new players, but also challenging enough for advanced players. Any students eligible under the ACF eligibility rules are welcome to participate!

We’ll also be allowing closed high school teams to compete, in the interest of giving them a chance to prep for their nationals against higher-level competition. However (1) high schoolers wishing to compete should be aware that this is a college medium difficulty tournament; very difficult for even advanced high school players, and (2) we ask that high school teams come accompanied by at least one adult in order to best navigate and enjoy UCLA’s beautiful campus.

Rules
This tournament will follow ACF’s official gameplay rules . We also will require all teams to follow a modified version of the PACE code of conduct, which we ask teams to briefly review before the tournament. No misconduct inconsistent with that code will be tolerated at this tournament. Any potential violations of that code of conduct can be reported at any time to the tournament director or staff. UCLA quizbowl is committed to ensuring that every participant feels as safe and welcome as possible at this tournament!

Registration
Email me at freddieoharaiii AT gmail DOT com to register teams for this tournament. Feel free to also just reach out if you have any questions or interest in playing.
Please include:
- The number of teams you will be bringing
- The number of buzzers you would be able to bring
- The number of staffers you expect to bring (you can adjust this later of course)
- The name and phone number of your team's primary contact for the tournament day
- Any other discounts you wish to receive (ie: new to quizbowl, travel, etc)

The soft field cap for this site is 8, after which teams will be placed on a waitlist. We ask teams try to have the number of teams they are bringing solidified (without adding or dropping more) by Thursday, February 15th at 11:59 pm.

Fees
Base fee: $110
New to quizbowl discount: −$30
Travel discount: −$5 per 100 miles traveled one-way, calculated via google maps
Buzzers: −$10 per functional buzzer system

The minimum fee for this tournament will be $45. The “new to quizbowl” discount is intended for schools that have not sent a team to any mainstream collegiate academic tournament in the 2022-23 season. (Note: does not apply to high school teams)
