The Ridgewood High School Quiz Bowl Team is excited to announce our first Maroon Bowl Mini tournament on December 9th, 2023. This tournament will be directed by me, Ritvik Katta, and Aditya Rajesh with assistance from our advisor, Mrs. Amanda Valeri.

Location:
Ridgewood High School is located at 627 East Ridgewood Ave, Ridgewood NJ, 07450. If you plan on using public transit, we are about a 20-minute walk from the Ridgewood train station and we are right next to a NJ Transit bus stop served by bus # 163.

Packet Information:

Tournament games will follow standard ACF rules consisting of untimed rounds of 20 tossups and 20 three-part 30-point bonuses. Each packet will come with a tiebreaker tossup in the event of ties. 15-point powers and -5-point negs will apply, though there will be no double negs. There will be no bonus bouncebacks.

Pricing:
$65 for the first team
$60 for each following team
$10 discount for each staffer
$5 discount for every working buzzer set

Minimum fee for each team: $45

W9 forms can be provided upon request.

Field:
The initial field will be 16 teams. If more teams are interested, we will increase the field as needed.

Based on the number of sign-ups, we will determine the schedule and bracketing.

Food:

-There are many great options near the High school but here of some of our picks:

Renato's, affordable pizza only a 5-10 minute walk from the school
Tito's, standard tex-mex fare that is a bit further out but nonetheless is delicious
Jersey Mikes, a sub chain shop close to campus
Daily Treat, Standard American diner fare, it is recommended that you do take out if you choose this place
Poke Zone, pretty far out so take out recommended, it has good quality poke bowls and sushi along side Ramen and other dishes
Village Tea Shop, Bubble tea place, good place to cool off after the tournament

Tournament timings:
The tournament will run from 9:15 am to around 5:45 pm, check in will open at 8 am with an opening meeting around 9 am.

In order to compete, money must be received before the tournament or during registration.

The deadline to register or drop teams will be November 25th. If your team drops between November 26th and December 4th, you will be responsible for 50% of the registration costs. If you drop after December 4th, you will be responsible for 100% of your team's registration cost.

Novice Qualifications:
Please note that we ask you do not register any players that have scored 45 ppg (points per game) or more in a high school tournament. This is a novice event and the aim is to give newer teams and players some exposure to quizbowl.
You have not played on a team that has reached either playoffs of any year of HSNCT or the top half of any year of PACE
This tournament will be open to middle school and high school teams

Additional Information:
We will also be offering the International Academic Competitions C Set National Qualifying Exams at the tournament during lunch. Students who score at least 75 on any exam, or who finish in the top 50% in an exam at the tournament in their age group (11th and 12th grade is Varsity / 10th and younger is JV), or across the country as of January 1, qualify for Nationals in each subject on April 25-28 in Arlington, VA.
The Qualifying Exams are offered for the National Science Bee, National Political Science Bee, US History Bee, and the National Geography Bee and US Geography Championships (one exam qualifies students for both geo events at Nationals). The cost is $15 per exam and can be added to the registration check, or paid for in cash at check-in at the tournament site.

Ridgewood Quiz Bowl is committed to keeping quizbowl a safe, welcoming, and fair space for all involved, be it players, moderators, or anyone else. Harassment or cheating in any form is absolutely unwelcome; we reserve the right to remove anyone from the tournament should we see it fit. Players must abide by the PACE Code of Conduct.

Hi everyone,

Here are a few updates as the date of the tournament nears.

We are changing the registration deadline to November 30th so that more teams can register. If your team drops between December 1st and December 4th, you will be responsible for 50% of the registration costs. If you drop after December 4th, you will be responsible for 100% of your team's registration cost.

We are also raising the Novice Qualifications to less than 55 PPG in an HS tournament from 45 PPG as many teams have played more tournaments over the past month. If you have any questions or believe that one of your players is a novice but does not fit the guidelines, please let us know and we will assess on a case-by-case basis.

If you know any teams or schools that may be interested, please have them sign up. The more teams we have, the better the experience will be for everyone. Middle School teams are also allowed to play in this tournament.
