Carolyn Hawkins Memorial Tournament @ Cookeville HS (TN), 12/2/23 (IS-226)

Post by smatson »

Cookeville High School (Cookeville, TN) will be hosting the Carolyn Hawkins Memorial Tournament on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023. Cookeville High School is located at 2335 N. Washington Ave., Cookeville, TN, 38501. Carolyn Hawkins was the longtime coach of the Cookeville High School Academic Team in the '90s and early '00s who led CHS to multiple state championships and fostered a love of this game in many, including myself. She was the recipient of the Cooper Award in 2003. Mrs. Hawkins died earlier this year following a short, sudden illness.

We will be using NAQT IS-226. Register here.

Tentatively, we'll be capping the field at 18 teams. We may grow the field size if there's interest and enough help.

Payment
$75/team
-$5 per buzzer system per team
-$10 per staffer
$50 minimum cost per team

Payment can be made on-site. Please make checks out to CHS Academic Team.

Format
We will play rounds of consisting of 20 tossups and 20 bonuses with powers (15) and negs (-5). No bouncebacks on bonuses.

Sign-in will begin at 7:45 AM (CST), the introductory meeting will begin at 8:30, and the first round will begin at 8:45. The tournament should end by 4:00.

The tournament will consist of bracketed round-robin preliminary rounds, a 1.5-hour lunch, and re-bracketed playoff and consolation rounds, and cross-over and finals matches as necessary. The specifics will depend on the number of competing teams. If we reach our field cap, each team will play 9 matches.

The top four teams will receive trophies, and the top 10 scorers after the preliminary rounds will receive book prizes.

Food
We will not be serving lunch on site. There are a handful of restaurants within a short drive of the school, and we will allow ample time for teams to leave campus for lunch. Restaurants and approximate driving distances will be communicated via email closer to the event. We will not be serving breakfast. We may or may not have a hospitality room for coaches and staff.
