2023 Southern California State Championships @ UCSD [5-20-23]

Post by YusAm »

The UCSD Quizbowl team is excited to announce the 2023 Southern California State Championships, to be hosted on our campus on Saturday, May 20th, 2023.

This tournament will have a competitive division run on DMA and a standard division run on SSNCT 2023. It will be directed by me, Yusuf Amanullah.

Eligibility:
Any high school student is eligible to play in either division. However, the competitive division will be using a higher difficulty set and is primarily geared towards players and teams preparing for the nationals championship tournaments. All other players are encouraged to play in the standard division, which will be using a regular difficulty high school set.

Middle school teams and players are not allowed to participate in the tournament.

Pricing:
New schools (schools that did not play a tournament in the 2021-2022 season) will pay a flat fee of $30 per team.
Returning schools will pay a base fee of $80 per team, with potential discounts.
There is a minimum fee of $30, after discounts, for each new or returning team.

Discounts:
-$5 per working buzzer system (must accommodate at least eight players)
-$10 per experienced moderator that provides their own laptop or tablet capable of editing Google Sheets
-$5 per 50 miles traveled per team (one-way)

Early Registration Discounts:
-$10 per team that registers on or before May 6th.

How to Register:
We are using the NAQT registration system for both the competitive and standard divisions. To register, use this link. More logistics information (including information about payment methods) will be provided in the week preceding the tournament to teams that have registered. If you have any questions, email us at [email protected].

Registration Limits:
We will implement a soft field cap of 10 teams per division until we can confirm rooms and staffers. Returning schools will be limited to registering three teams each. Any additional teams they would like to register will be placed onto a waitlist. If reserved spots are not filled one week prior to the tournament or we can expand the field cap, teams on the waitlist will be let off.

If we do not have enough teams register for the standard division by Saturday May 13th, we will cancel the standard division tournament bracket. Teams that have already registered for the standard division will be notified and given an opportunity to register for the competitive division.
