SCUBA @ Discord (5/14/2023)

Post by Yaj »

CCA Quizbowl is very excited to announce Southern California’s Unvitational for Binate Academics, or SCUBA! This will be an open duos tournament for high schoolers in Southern California, and will be directed by Yaj Jhajhria and Ishank Kadadi.

This tournament will mirror DUOS II, a high school regs+ difficulty question set. Players who attended the varsity division at DNE VI should expect these questions’ difficulty to be somewhat similar to those played there, and the set should be good practice for players planning to attend the HSNCT.

The tournament will be held on Sunday, May 14, 2022. Games will begin promptly at 9 A.M. and will continue until around 4 P.M, with a break for lunch. Games will be played on Discord, with Buzzin.live used for buzzing.

Eligibility:
This tournament is open to all players currently attending middle or high school in Southern California. This is an open tournament, so teammates do not necessarily have to attend the same school.

Duos must consist of exactly two players; no more, no less. Players who don’t have a partner can put their name on the free agents list on the registration sheet.

Format:
This tournament will adhere to standard ACF rules, with the modifications for online play and with power marks. Powers will be worth 20 points. To ensure fair gameplay, players will be required to have their cameras on and have two hands in view.

Teams will play a series of preliminary games, followed by reseeding into playoff brackets. The exact format will be determined based on the final field size, and will be posted prior to the tournament.

Pricing:
The cost for this tournament will be $30 per duo, or $15 for each free agent. Payment can be made via PayPal or Zelle. Specific payment information will be provided to registered teams prior to the tournament.

Registration:
A team formation spreadsheet can be found here. To officially register for the tournament, put your duo’s information on the sheet and then email [email protected] to confirm your registration.

There is a soft field cap of 10 duos, which will be expanded if we can find enough staffers. Teams canceling their registration after May 8 will have to pay the full registration fee.

Staff:
We welcome people interested in staffing this tournament to sign up using this Google Form. Staffers must have prior quizbowl tournament staffing experience. We also will only need one staffer who can read and scorekeep for every two teams registered for the tournament. Staffers who can both read and scorekeep for their own room will be compensated $10 for a full day of staffing, while staffers who are only reading, only scorekeeping, or can only stay for half the day will be paid $5.

Misconduct:
Misconduct, including but not limited to harassment and cheating, are not tolerated at CCA Quizbowl or at any of our events. Failure to comply with the PACE NSC Code of Conduct will result in players and/or teams responsible for the infraction being immediately ejected from the tournament and banned from future CCA Quizbowl events. Any incidents should be reported to staff or through the anonymous misconduct form.

Updates for this tournament will be communicated primarily by email or on this forum post. Please direct any inquiries to [email protected].
