NAQT/MEQBA Maine State Championships @ Bates College (3/25/23)

Post by nicole. »

I am pleased to announce, in affiliation with the Harward Center for Community Partnership at Bates College, the 2023 NAQT/MEQBA Maine State Championships, in-person, in Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine! All important information is below.

The tournament will be directed by myself, with Ronan Goulden and Kaidi Stec assisting with tournament directing duties.

Location and Dates

The NAQT/MEQBA State Championships will be hosted in Pettingill Hall at Bates College in Lewiston, ME, on March 25th, 2023. This is around 45 minutes from Portland, 35 minutes from Augusta, and 90 minutes from Bangor.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, March 25th, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with registration opening at 8:30 AM.

Questions/Format

The NAQT/MEQBA State Championships will be using the NAQT IS-217 set. We will be using the standard 20/20 format and NAQT rules, but there will be no game clock and there will be 5 seconds after each tossup instead of 3.

Teams will be fairly placed into preliminary brackets before being re-seeded for playoffs. Teams will be guaranteed a minimum of 8 games; teams will be expected to play all available rounds, even if your team is not in contention for the championship.

Teams

There are a maximum of 6 players per team, four of whom may play at once. If you wish to bring more players than that, please register additional teams. There are no exceptions to this rule. Teams may play short, with one player as a minimum. Nobody may switch teams during the tournament, such as from “A” to “B” or otherwise.

Only students who go to school in the state of Maine will be eligible to play. We are not accepting out-of-state registrations.

The field is capped at 24 teams. You will be placed onto a waitlist if you miss the cutoff, and the field may expand if we get more staff.

We are happy to allow pseudonymous teams and teams not directly sponsored by their district to register. However, we do have certain requirements for these teams, so please contact us via phone or email prior to registration and we will be happy to work with you.

It is not mandatory for a coach to attend with their team, however, an adult chaperone is required.

Readers, Buzzers, and Question Sets

Since we have no registration fee for this tournament, I do not have discounts I can give for Buzzer Sets. We still need them though, so bring them anyways.

Prizes

Trophies will be awarded to the top 2 teams after each tournament and the individual with the highest average Points per Game overall. The eight or so high scorers at each tournament will be awarded book prizes.

Fees

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Harward Center, we are not charging fees for this event. Teams will play at no cost, and there will be no registration fee.

Registration

Registration is here. Once you receive a confirmation from us, you are officially registered. Registration will open on Monday, February 20th.

Please ensure that you register prior to the day of the tournament! Registration closes on March 14th, 2023.

Food

Teams will be given a list of local restaurants in the Lewiston-Auburn area. As well, we are looking into an option for students to be served at the Bates College Commons.

Stats

Full and complete team and individual statistics will be posted within 24 hours after the completion of this event.

Please let us know if you have any further questions! You can ask in this thread or email [email protected] or [email protected].
