Thomas Jefferson Middle School Tournament (TJMST) Online - 1/28/23

Post by Alec Riso »

The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is pleased to announce the Thomas Jefferson Middle School Tournament (TJMST) on January 28th, 2023. THIS TOURNAMENT WILL BE HOSTED ONLINE - SEE BELOW.

QUESTION SET:
The tournament will be using MS-44, a question set produced by NAQT. As a result, the top 15% of the field (rounded up) will qualify for MSNCT.

TJMST's current field cap is 24, but this may be increased depending on staffer availability. Please sign up by January 24th. Teams will be limited to at most 6 people, so schools planning to bring more than 6 students should register another team. During the rounds, up to 4 students are permitted to play at any given time, and up to 2 students can sub out at halftime. Teams may have fewer than 4 people. Teams dropping out after 11:59 PM on January 19th will still be responsible for the entirety of the fee, though exceptions may be granted in extreme situations.

ELIGIBILITY:
All students on a team must be from the same school (no “open” or “chimera” teams allowed). Seeing as this is a middle school tournament, all players must be middle schoolers (up to 8th grade) or younger. Teams from all areas are allowed to register, but be aware that the starting time is in EST.

CHEATING AND MISCONDUCT:
Rules against cheating and misconduct will be strictly enforced at this tournament. We reserve the right to remove anyone suspected of cheating or misconduct from the tournament. We will also notify coaches and relevant quizbowl organizations about any such acts. If you suspect anyone of cheating, please contact a TD immediately.

To monitor signs of cheating, we will be requiring a camera (laptop or webcam) to be on at all times during this tournament, directed in such a way that at least one hand of the player is visible.

We will not tolerate nor condone any form of misconduct. If you feel threatened or in any way unsafe at this tournament, please reach out to a TD or staffer and fill out this quizbowl misconduct form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... Q/viewform

LOGISTICS:
This tournament will be conducted entirely online through Discord, with a short opening meeting before the tournament starts. All players/coaches should join the Discord server at least a day before the tournament to familiarize themselves with the environment. All players should be present for the opening meeting at 8:30 AM EST. We plan for the tournament to end at 5PM EST. More information will follow in a logistics email the week before the tournament.

FEES:
The registration fee is $70 for a first team from a school, and $60 for each subsequent team.
NOTE: These fees MUST be paid before the tournament, no later than January 24th. After this date, no refunds will be given.

Registration fees should be paid through the online MySchoolBucks portal. The payment link will be available on the forums prior to the tournament, once our confirmation announcement is posted (email [email protected] if you want to be notified when it comes out). Please send one payment per school. If you need those details earlier to be able to organize payment, please request an invoice through NAQT’s registration system, and we will send payment information that way.

SIGN UP:
We have recently released a registration link in a follow-up announcement.

Please direct any questions to the Thomas Jefferson Quizbowl officers at [email protected]. We hope to see you on the 28th!

PAYMENT: Registration fees will be done through MySchoolBucks for all schools OUTSIDE of Fairfax County. An email will be sent to each of these schools shortly with a MySchoolBucks payment link, through the email given on the NAQT registration site. Let us know at [email protected] if you want the link to be sent to a different email.

PAYMENT (NON-FCPS SCHOOLS): We have extended the payment deadline to January 26th. Please pay through the MySchoolBucks link before then.

PAYMENT (FCPS SCHOOLS): If your school is in the FCPS system, please send payment by check. Please send one payment per school. When making your payment, note your school’s name and “TJMST Quizbowl 1/28/23” in the memo line, address the check to “attn finance”, and address the envelope to “TJ finance office”. Please mail the check to TJHSST (6560 Braddock Rd, Alexandria, VA 22312) by the 26th and send an email so we know to expect your check.

PLEASE NOTE: An adult chaperone is required for each school during the tournament, in case we need to contact someone right away. Please be sure to put the Chaperone’s phone number on your NAQT registration, and have the chaperone be online and available throughout the 28th.
