Ithaca Fall Tournament XI - Ithaca High School, Ithaca, NY (11/19/22) [NAQT IS-215]

Post by mrkirkmath »

The Ithaca High School Quizbowl team will be hosting our 11th annual Ithaca Fall Tournament on Saturday, November 19, 2022. This tournament will be held in person at Ithaca High School in Ithaca, NY. We would expect all players to be present on site by 8:30 for a morning informational meeting, and we plan to start the first round no later than 9:00.

Set Used
We will be using NAQT Invitational Series Packet 215, a standard-difficulty set for high school teams. We suggest reviewing NAQT’s list of tournaments organized by packet to check for possible conflicts with this tournament.

Registration
We are using NAQT’s registration system to manage registrations for this tournament. You will need to log in to the NAQT site in order to register; if you do not already have an account, you can quickly create one on that site. On initial registration, please provide your school name, number of teams intended (this can be changed later), your name/contact information, the number of buzzer systems and staffers you are bringing (if any), and any other information we should know. You can complete registration without listing a roster; that step can come later. Registration will close on Saturday, November 12th

COVID-19 Safety Protocols
We kindly request that all attendees at this tournament, including players, staff, and chaperones/coaches have been fully vaccinated and boosted prior to attending this tournament. We furthermore kindly request and encourage that all attendees wear a well-fitted mask for the duration of their time at Ithaca High School.

Staff in each room will be instructed to sanitize buzzer equipment after each round of play, and additional hand sanitizer and sanitization materials will be available in each game room and the cafeteria.

Fee Structure
The base price is $85 for the first team and $75 for each additional team. We are also offering the following discounts (applied to a school’s overall registration cost):
  • -$10 per staffer provided by the school (all staffers assigned to be a reader will be required to create a free account at http://www.naqt.com in order to access the online question delivery system)
  • -$5 per functioning lock-out buzzer system provided by schools
  • -$10 per 100-miles traveled to get to Ithaca High school (as determined by Google Maps)
  • -$15 for any new school/program (a school that has never played at either an Ithaca Fall or Spring event in the past)
The minimum fee per team is $50. Checks should be written to "Ithaca High School Brain Team" and can be turned in on November 19th or mailed ahead of time to:

On-site Contact Information
This tournament will be directed by IHS Quizbowl team coach and adviser Benjamin Kirk. He can be reached for questions at [email protected] or contacted by phone at (607) 274-2191. An emergency cell phone contact will be provided to registered teams, or to those who request it via email.

Lunch
Previous attendees to our Fall Tournament will remember the pizza and sub sandwich lunch, accompanied by ala carte International Tasting Bar on-site provided by the Ithaca High School International Club. The club has undergone a change in leadership, but we hope that this tradition will continue. Details about lunch will be made available at a later date, but as always we recommend staying at the school for lunch or bringing your own, since the nearest restaurants are 2+ miles away in heavy and unpredictable Ithaca weekend traffic. You may leave for lunch at your own risk, but with the warning that we will restart the tournament promptly at the announced restart time, and will start reading packets to whomever is in place at that time.

Misconduct Information
All players, spectators, and coaches must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Players, spectators, and coaches should report misconduct either directly to staff or via the misconduct form found at the bottom of the PACE Code of Conduct. Every instance of misconduct will be dealt with seriously by tournament staff. Similarly, the staff will investigate every allegation of cheating and reserves the right to report confirmed cheaters to local and national Quizbowl organizations.

Tournament Format
Games will consist of 20 tossup/bonus pairs, read in untimed matches. During play, we will use standard ACF five-second timing rules (five seconds to buzz in after tossup completion, five seconds to start answer to tossup after buzz, five seconds to start answer to bonus after bonus completion). The exact bracketing format used will depend on the final number of registered teams, but we expect to run a quasi-seeded round robin format in the morning, followed by a rebracketing and another round robin after lunch, with a single final match to determine tournament champion if needed.

Top finishers will qualify for the 2023 NAQT High School and/or Small School National Championships, and we anticipate they will also qualify for the 2023 PACE National Scholastic Championship.

We're setting an initial field cap of 24 teams, with the potential to grow past that with sufficient staffing.
