ANNOUNCEMENT: 2022 Quiz Bowl Summer League

Post by Serpentine284 »

I am pleased to announce the Quiz Bowl Summer League, an online open packet submission tournament for this summer. The tournament will be run by myself, Josh Rubel (Greenhill HS/Williams College), and Grant Maiorana (Solon HS/Purdue University).

DIFFICULTY:

The questions for this tournament will be written at a high school "regular-plus" difficulty. If you would like a comparison to sets with similar difficulty, see 2019 BLAST, 2020 Saturnalia, or 2022 DART II.

FORMAT:

Rounds will be run online over Zoom; however, a Discord server will be used for discussion and setting up rounds. Rounds will be played once per week at a date and time worked out between the teams facing each other that week. We will try our best to make sure that teams can play full each round; however, a round will not be allowed to be delayed to another week. If a team cannot field a full roster at any point during the week, then they will have to play shorthanded for that round. Games will begin on July 3rd, 2022.

TEAMS:

This is an open tournament, so teams do not need to be limited to players from the same school or grade. In addition to eligibility requirements, the only other requirement is that there is a maximum of six players allowed on each team; however, you do not need to have six players to participate. Only four players may play a given round; substitutions are not allowed mid-game but are allowed in between weeks.

ELIGIBILITY:

This tournament is open to all incoming and current high schoolers. In addition, graduating seniors (high school class of 2022) AND rising second-year undergraduates (high school class of 2021) are also allowed to join or form a team.

DIVISIONS:

At the moment, this tournament will have one division that every team will play in. If there is enough interest in this tournament, this may be amended to split the field into two divisions.

PACKET SUBMISSION:

This is a packet submission tournament, meaning that teams will each write a full packet* that will then be edited and used for one week's round. The team writing the packet will receive a bye for that week's round and are welcome to spectate any team's round that week.

*Note: whether or not teams write a full packet or half packet will be determined based on the number of teams that sign up. If enough teams sign up, this may be switched to a half packet submission.

DISTRIBUTION:

The distribution for this tournament is as follows:

4/4 Literature (1/1 American, 1/1 Anglosphere, 1/1 European, 1/1 World)
4/4 History (1/1 American, 1/1 European, 2/2 World/Ancient/Other)
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Other Science)
3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 Visual Fine Arts, 1/1 Auditory Fine Arts, 1/1 Other Fine Arts)
3/3 RMPSS (1/1 Religion, 1/1 Mythology, 1/1 Philosophy/Social Science)
3/3 Other (1/1 Geography, 1/1 Current Events, 1/1 Pop Culture/Other Academic)

In addition, teams must write an extra tossup and bonus in any categories of their choosing in case the editors decide that a written question is not useable.

PAYMENT:

This tournament is $10 for each player on a team. In addition, if the packet is not fully written and submitted by 11:59 PM EST on July 2, 2022, the team will be charged an extra $10 per person. Payment information will be sent out in a later email along with an invite to the tournament Discord server.

STAFFING:

If you would like to staff this tournament, we are more than happy to accept any and all willing people. Staff need not be limited to the eligibility restrictions for teams outlined above. In addition, staff are not required to read for every round. If you would like to read one round only, that is perfectly acceptable as well. Payment for staffing will be determined based on the amount of rounds read.

SIGN-UP:

Teams may sign up for this tournament using the spreadsheet below. The deadline to sign up is June 18 to allow the TDs sufficient time to adjust the format if necessary. Staff may also sign-up with the same link.

We hope to see you soon!

Due to the large amount of signups already, we have decided to move up the signup deadline to this Saturday, June 11th. We will contact teams with less than 4 players about adding free agents on Friday the 10th, and links will be sent out on the 11th.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on discord at jsrubel#7459

Hi, I signed up as a staffer several weeks ago. I haven't heard anything and the summer is winding down now so I assume this was cancelled or shifted back to the fall. Can we get an update?
