2022 Cheater's Bowl [Online, June 4-13]

Post by ezubaric »

I’m an AI researcher (and former quizbowler) who builds computers that can answer questions. You can watch some of our previous human—computer trivia competitions here:
https://sites.google.com/view/qanta/past-events

This year, we're doing something different. We're running a competition to see how well humans and computers can work together to answer questions. We'll show you a leadin from an old quiz bowl question (from before 2018) or (in 10% of cases) from another set of questions and you need to use a search engine to try to figure out what the answer is. If you can do that quickly, you get additional points.

You will receive a gift card for scoring in the top five (by answering the most questions correctly). The payouts for 1st,2nd,3rd ~ 5th place are: 50,25,10. There will also be raffles for $25. You will be responsible for any taxes assessed on the compensation.
For instance, consider this leadin:
At its premiere, the librettist of this opera portrayed a character who asks for a glass of wine with his dying wish.

It’s really hard for a computer to figure out that this is Emanuel Schikaneder playing Papageno in the “Magic Flute”. But you can get to Emanuel Schikaneder with searches like “German Impresario” … we want to teach computers how to do the same thing!

This is an online competition with prizes for the best players who can find searches that can get to the answer (we’ve filtered out questions that are easy to find answers for). But we hope that you'll also do this to help advance science, as this will help train computers to do the same thing. Plus, it will help you study.

This will be online, will take about an hour, and you can do it any day over the next 10 days, from June 4th to June 13th, 2022. But we recommend you do it from 2-4 Eastern, as we’ll have live tech support on a Discord channel during those days. (More details once you sign up.)

And even if you can’t play, please help us spread the word!

Thanks you for your participation!

We are happy to announce that we are offering an additional prize! The player who won the most score in the last 72 hours (from June 11th to 13th) will get $25. This prize is independent of other prizes, as well as your current score. Try to overtake the winner!
