2023 IQBT Undergraduate Championship - Congratulations Chicago A!

Post by AKKOLADE »

This is the announcement that International Quiz Bowl Tournaments will be hosting its first Undergraduate Championship on March 4-5, 2023.

John Lawrence will be the head editor. Other category editors are Will Alston, Matt Bollinger, Emmett Laurie, Evan Lynch, and Eric Mukherjee. Fred Morlan will be the tournament director.

The difficulty of this set will be three dots per the College Quiz Bowl Calendar Difficulty Scale.

This tournament will be hosted online.

The entry fee will be $325 per team.

Universities and colleges are eligible to register multiple teams for this tournament if they qualify at the IQBT Undergraduate Championship Qualification Event.

The field will initially be capped at 30 teams, but it will be expanded as interest and staffing allows.

Information about eligibility

Teams may only be made up of teams that qualify as undergraduate students, per the following information.

A competition year is defined as beginning August 1 of a year and concludes on the subsequent July 31.

A postsecondary degree is an associate’s, bachelor’s, doctorate, or master’s degree.

An accredited school is one that offers classes towards earning a postsecondary degree.

A class is a course taken for credit at an accredited school. Classes include practical experiences such as internships or work placement programs. Classes may be taken online.

An undergraduate student is defined as:
• Having graduated from high school or have completed a GED.
• Having not graduated with a postsecondary degree (excluding associate's degrees taking fewer than four years to earn) before the competition year.
• Having completed no more than ten semesters of post-high school education.
• Taking two classes over the competition year.

To compete in the fall semester, an undergraduate student must be taking two “normal” classes worth of credit at the time, where, for a traditional, two semester per academic year college, each class would be worth 3.0 credit hours.

To compete in the spring semester, an undergraduate student must be taking or have taken a total of two “normal” classes worth of credit over the academic year, where, for a traditional, two semester per academic year college, each class would be worth 3.0 credit hours. Students who fulfill this requirement and graduated after the fall semester are eligible in the spring semester.

Question distribution

The question distribution of subjects is as follows:

Posting in this thread since I think my questions are more specifically about this tournament. Can you clarify what this means? Given Em said “a qualifier,” is this a NSC/HSNCT model where teams can qualify via multiple pre-approved tournaments that are each independently run, and where sets/mirrors can apply to be approved as qualifiers? Or an ACF/ICT model where there’s one tournament per year you play to qualify?

Additionally, is MRNA 2, currently slated for mirrors starting mid-February 2023, being moved up so that teams have a clear idea on whether they’ve qualified further ahead of the planned March 4 IQBT nats date?

We're still working on the details for qualifying; please disregard that info in the MRNA thread for now.

How is this at all worth it for an online tournament? I understand that the set writers and staff need to be compensated, but this seems like a *steep* price for most clubs to pay to send four people to a tournament that's online with an unspecified number of guaranteed games.

1) Consider the market price for Tier 1 quality writing
2) Consider how many teams we can reasonably expect to play this question set and maintain a reasonable guarantee of continued question security
3) Consider the price of paying top quality staff (ACF Nats/ICT level) a fair wage for their time
4) Consider that IQBT doesn't have tournaments it can use to subsidize this one, like ACF does

The phrase "Having not previously graduated with a postsecondary degree." has been replaced with the phrase "Having not graduated with a postsecondary degree before the competition year."

. . . .

• Having not graduated with a postsecondary degree before the competition year.
Someone pursuing their bachelor's degree at a four-year institution would be ineligible if they had already earned an Associate's from a two-year institution, but someone who just earned credit-hours at that same institution without earning their Associate's remains eligible?

I'm setting the official registration deadline for the Undergraduate Championship as January 23, 2023. At that point, non-registrations will be treated as declines for invitations, and subsequent teams will be invited after that.

Here are the tournament schedules we have planned for fields of 30 and 32 teams.

30 teams:

We will start with three preliminary round robins of ten teams. We will then regroup into five playoff groups of six (the top two of each preliminary group will be placed into one playoff group, 3rd & 4th from each preliminary group will be placed into another playoff group, etc.) for a playoff round robin with one carryover game. We will then have advantaged finals.

We will not use paper tiebreakers with this format.

32 teams:

We will start with four preliminary rounds robins of eight teams. We will then regroup into four playoff groups of eight (the top two from the preliminary groups into one playoff group, etc.) with 1 carryover game. We will then have advantaged finals.

We will also not use paper tiebreakers with this format.

The registration deadline is coming up on Monday, January 23 for our initially qualified teams. There are eight outstanding invitations to teams from that group. Not responding by that deadline will be an automatic decline of the invite.

The sign up form for the waitlist & stand by team lists is available here.

As a reminder, waitlist teams are willing to fill an open slot and pay the entry fee to guarantee a spot in the field. Stand by teams will be contacted on short notice - under 48 hours before the start of the tournament - to fill open spots with no entry feel. Waitlist teams take priority over stand by teams for entering the field.

The current field of teams is available here.

I have lost power after bad wind storms in the area. I have contingency plans in place, so it should not delay the tournament, but it is going to keep me from emailing out the schedule file for a couple of hours.

If you are a staffer and have somehow not received information about the tournament, please email [email protected].

Similarly, if you are part of a team playing tomorrow and do not have information about the tournament, check with the person who signed your team up and their email. If you still haven’t received anything, email me at the same address.

Congratulations to our top six teams: Chicago A, Georgia Tech, Cornell A, Harvard, Texas, and Illinois A!

Complete preliminary stats are available here. Tiebreaker stats will be posted at a later date.
