Bulldog Buzzer Battle III, Berwick, PA, April 23

Post by x'x(-1)x'y »

Berwick Area Quiz Bowl proudly announces that "Bulldog Buzzer Battle III: Return of the Buzzer" will take place at Berwick Area High School on Saturday, April 23rd, 2022. The BBB will be a high-school introductory level tournament and hopes to draw students new to Saturday tournaments from northeastern PA, as well as serve as a great prep tournament for underclassmen from regular “Saturday tournament” schools.

(WVIA Scholastic Scrimmage schools, this is a great opportunity to reward your participants from the fall and provide some practice for new students who would like to participate!)

The tournament will use NAQTs Introductory Invitation Series Set #IS-211A. As we are looking to jumpstart Saturday tournament quiz bowl in Northeastern PA, we will be offering incentives for schools in the Northeastern PA region (*IUs #16 Central Susquehanna, #17 BLAST, #18 Luzerne, and #19 Northeastern) to participate:
• While we are using this event as a fundraiser, any NE PA* school that hasn’t played a Saturday tournament since January 2019 can have one team play for ANY voluntary contribution – you name your price!
• For experienced schools and those outside NE PA, we will offer significant discounts for contributing staffers, buzzers, and additional teams…
o -$10 per additional team (for 2nd and 3rd teams)
o -$10 per buzzer set (encouraging teams to bring buzzers)
o -$20 per coach-recommended moderator (faculty member or student)

We hope to see you in Berwick on April 23!

Tournament Details:
Date: Saturday, April 23, 2022
Location: Berwick Area Senior High School, 1100 Fowler Avenue, Berwick, PA 18603
Question Set: NAQT IS-211A
Format: 20/20 Tossup-Bonus games, round-robin morning brackets, playoff/consolation afternoon rounds, possible placement round depending on number of teams
Check-in from 8:00-8:30am
Round #1 Start Time at 9:00am
Morning Rounds (likely five)– expected completion of Morning Rounds by 12noon
Teams are guaranteed three afternoon rounds, with top nine teams likely playing four rounds.
Afternoon Meeting: 1:15 or 75 minutes after conclusion of Morning
Expected Awards Ceremony from 4:15-4:45pm

Tournament Fees:
NE PA schools new to Saturday Quiz Bowl: NAME YOUR PRICE! (for one team)
Regular registration fee: $75/team (note staff and buzzer discount below)
Moderator Discount: -$20 (experienced faculty moderator or high-school player)
Buzzer Discount: -$10/buzzer system
Multiple Team Discount: -$10 for 2nd & 3rd teams

We will remind all registered teams before the event to ask players to stay home if they feel sick on the day of the event and will sanitize buzzers between rounds.
We will be taking pre-orders for pizza for those who wish to stay for lunch. There are a couple of quick service options within 5-10 minute driving distance – information will be provided for those who register.
Our initial soft cap for this tournament will be 12 teams, with no more than 2 teams from any school initially registered. If adequate staff and buzzers are made available, we hope to expand this cap to 18 teams.
Awards will be provided for the top 3 teams overall, and for the highest-ranking team from the “east Northeast” (IUs #18 and #19) and “central Northeast (IUs #17 and #18)

Is there a registration form to fill out or should teams just email you? Have a great day and good luck with this tournament, NEPA is a really promising region with how many scholastic scrimmage teams there are and it is cool to see a heavy outreach push out there.

Congratulations to Ithaca A winning the 2022 Bulldog Buzzer Battle III tournament without a blemish, defeating Wallenpaupack A in a round 9 match-up of undefeated teams in our 11-team round robin. Wallenpaupack A finished second with one loss

Many thanks to the coaches (several of whom moderated -- thank you to Ben Kirk, Kelly Kurtz, Jill Marino, and Ryan Neenan, and to Pete Kendron as well) and players for reintroducing over-the-buzzer quiz bowl back to northeastern Pennsylvania for the first time in over two years. Special shoutout for Mifflinburg for attending their first-ever Saturday tournament.

Thanks also to our middle school students who staffed the tournament with enthusiasm and energy -- Go Dawgs! Not sure what time of year, but we'd love to do it again next academic year.
