Protean Challenge (NEWT, 3/19)

Post by oriley »

Northfield Quizbowl is pleased to announce that we will be hosting an online, nationwide high school mirror of NEWT, a hard high school difficulty set most comparable to HFT 2019, on Saturday, March 19, 2022. Teams comfortable playing IS sets will find NEWT a slight step up in difficulty. There will be an opening meeting at 8:45 AM Central, and games will begin at 9 AM Central.

The tournament will take place online over Zoom and Buzzin.live. Depending on field size, all teams will be guaranteed around eight or nine games.

A number of games will be recorded at this tournament and released once the set clears later this year. All teams will be asked to fill out a waiver form indicating that we can record some of their games. This is optional. If a team does not wish to be recorded, that will not prohibit them from playing the tournament—we just won’t record any of their games.

For obvious reasons, we will prefer to upload games that are closer in score. Footage of more lopsided games will likely not be uploaded, but can still be used for compilations of “best buzzes” and so forth. Not all teams will play in recorded games.

Registration
To register to play this tournament, teams should fill out this form. Staffers should register by filling out this form.

The deadline to register to play this tournament is the evening of Tuesday, March 15, 2022. Teams who drop from the field after 8 PM Central on Wednesday, March 16 will be required to pay the full fee. Please drop before the registration deadline if you need to drop.

Staffer pay - moderators will be paid $50. Scorekeepers will be paid $30. Staffers who alternate between the two will be paid $40.

Fees
Base fee per team: $80
Staffer discount: -$40
New-to-quizbowl discount: -$55 for one team

The new-to-quizbowl discount is for schools who have not sent a team to a regular, academic quizbowl tournament since January 1, 2016. Knowledge Bowl and History Bowl do not count.

Cheating
To prevent cheating, all players will be required to have both of their hands and their screen in view of a camera. This may be easily accomplished with a second camera angle, or by buzzing on a phone. For this reason, unfortunately we will not be able to permit any camera exemptions. Those who have issues with Internet who wish to play this tournament might inquire as to whether their team can meet in-person in one location, such as a school classroom.

We have heard zero cheating accusations at all tournaments we have run, and we are eager to keep that streak intact.

Payment
I prefer PayPal, Venmo, or a check, but please reach out if you prefer a different payment method. My email is oriley1201 AT icloud DOT com.

It’s called “challenge” so the January 9th sequel can be called “tournament.”

Thanks for playing the NEWT set, everybody! As the set is not clear, please join the "2021 NEWT Discussion" private group if you want to discuss the set. (Go to your user control panel, click on usergroups, then find "2021 NEWT Discussion" and join it)

If you prefer, we also have a discussion Discord server for the set up and running. The link to join it is here.
