Prison Bowl Mainsite (PBXIV) - March 19th - Hunter College HS

Post by ClevelandCavaliers »

Hunter College High School is thrilled to announce that it will be hosting the main site of Prison Bowl XIV, our annual housewrite, on Saturday, March 19th, 2022. Hunter College High School is located at 71 E 94th Street, New York, NY 10128, between Park and Madison Avenues.

Format
This tournament will most likely be in-person, though there is a slight probability, depending on the COVID situation, that it could move online. There will be a brief opening meeting at 8:45 AM, and the first round will start at 9:00 AM. The tournament is expected to end at 6:00 PM.

The tournament will be using Prison Bowl XIV, a regular plus difficulty set written and edited by the Hunter College High School Quiz Bowl team. Information about the set is linked here.

Tournament games will follow standard ACF rules consisting of untimed rounds of 20 tossups and 20 three-part 30-point bonuses. Each packet will come with a tiebreaker tossup in the event of ties. 15-point powers and -5-point negs will apply, though there will be no double negs. There will be no bonus bouncebacks.

The tournament will consist of bracketed round robin prelims and re-bracketed round robin playoffs; the exact format will be decided after the field size is determined. All teams will be guaranteed at least 9 rounds.

There will be trophies for top teams and book prizes for the top ten scorers in prelims.

Registration
To register for the tournament, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/85uw7Yudck49kPiN8
We will email you with confirmation once we receive your sign-up. The due date to drop teams will be March 10th. The soft field cap for this tournament is 24 teams, but we will expand the field as necessary.

Payment
$70 for the first team from a school
$60 for each subsequent team
$-5 for each working buzzer system (provided the tournament is in-person)
$-10 for each good moderator
Minimum fee for each team from a school is $50.
Further discounts can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

We prefer payment through a check made to Hunter College High School with team name on the memo line on the day of the tournament. If this is not possible, cash will be accepted.

Eligibility
To play in this tournament you must be a current high school senior or younger; there are no other eligibility restrictions.

Transportation (note that the following two sections apply only if the tournament is in-person)
Hunter College High School is located at 71 E 94th Street, New York, NY 10128 between Park and Madison Avenues. It is accessible via the 86th Street and 96th Street stops on the 6 train line, and the 86th and 96th Street stops on the Q train line. We can also be reached by the M1-4 buses along 5th and Madison Avenues, M101-103 buses on Lexington and 3rd Avenues, and M96 and M106 buses on 96th Street. There is a bus drop-off area at our school along Park Avenue, and cars can park at Majestic Car Park, located on 95th Street between Park and Lexington.

In case the curb around Hunter and Majestic Car Park are both crowded, there are a few other parking options:

Gallery Garage Corporation (>1 block away, 94th and Madison)
Icon Parking Systems (~2 blocks away, 94th and 3rd)
Icon Parking Systems (~3 blocks away, 95th between 2nd and 3rd)
Garage Management Company (~3 blocks away, 94th between 2nd and 3rd)

Food
For lunch, we’ll release teams for an hour to explore the numerous local eateries in the area. We’ll be providing a map detailing where the best of these can be found.

We have reached our field cap of 30 teams; all teams that sign up from this point forward will be put on a waitlist until we are certain that we will have enough staffing experience to expand to 36 teams.

In the meantime, please fill out this form if you would be able to staff for Prison Bowl; any help would be much appreciated.

We have had a few drops; there are now two spots remaining in the field. If you and your team are free to play a quiz bowl tournament on March 19th, we encourage you to come!

Just wanted to leave a quick note about how well-run this tournament was; it was very easy for me as a staffer to do my job. In Andrew's unfortunate absence, all of the other Hunter members really stepped up to run a fun tournament. In particular, Amanda and Jacob did a good job running stats, opening meeting, and registration, and they were very understanding about last-minute issues preventing Ridgewood from bringing their buzzers. I'd also love to shoutout Aruna for helping run a very clear staffer meeting and being flexible in helping me with a complicated tiebreak issue.
