Announcing MSQBRank

Post by gtag »

Hello! The MSQBRank team is pleased to be introducing MSQBRank! We created an algorithmic, math-based way to rank middle school teams based on set performance. We expect to regularly post rankings on our website

First Rankings

Our first rankings are out and can be found here. Congratulations to Middlesex A for ranking first. Greenhill A, Westminster A, Challenger-Strawberry Park A, and Harvest Park A were all not far behind!

Methodology

A big thanks to Groger Ranks, who created a formula that we use to produce our rankings. We use powers per game, points per bonus, and negs per game to calculate a total score for each team. Beware that not all tournaments can be used; for more on this, and more on the math behind our scores, check out our website.

Our Team

The MSQBRank team will consist of the following people, all closely related to the middle school quiz bowl community:

Andrew Gao
Deven Hagen
Jacob Hardin-Bernhardt
Aditya Khambekar
Neev Sahgal
George Tagtmeier

Errors

Please contact us via email at [email protected] if you spot any misspelled team names, duplicates, wrong states, false data/data that hasn’t been inputted yet, see any other errors, or have any other comments for us.

I have serious doubts about a lot of high schoolers' ability to be mature about stats and public rankings.

Doing this with 13-year-olds seems really unwise.

I can't find anything on your website that says how the "regions" for regional rankings are determined. How are you defining them?

Here are our regions:

Anything outside the 50 states and D.C. is part of the international region (shortened to "INTL" on our website).

Our February rankings are up on our website here: https://msqb.org/rankings/.

We are also holding polls since nationals season is coming up soon in just a few weeks. We will first be holding a poll of the top 10 middle school players. You may vote here: https://forms.gle/4nAJLfcjKVRg5h4A9.

Poll results will be included in our March rankings, just before MS IPNCT!

March MSQBRank should be out in a few hours because of a delay caused by a robot infiltration. We are working to wrestle control away from the bots, but in the meantime, you can check out their AI-generated rankings here.

In case you didn't see on our March MSQBRank rankings, we are running a team poll of the top 25 teams (10 required) before MSNCT! The poll closes on April 30th, at 11:59 PM EDT. If you have any questions, let us know at [email protected].

The link to the poll is here: https://forms.gle/V6jfxu4SgpterKtVA.

Team poll results are now out on our website here: https://msqb.org/rankings/polls!
Raw ballots are here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0.

Since many middle school tournaments happened yesterday (and their stats aren't out yet), we are delaying our April rankings a few days so we can add stats from today's tournaments. The goal for our April rankings is to be a true pre-nats ranking, so we want to include all the stats.

Just a reminder that MSQBRank is running live rankings using our/the GrogerRanks formula. Those can be found here, under the Pure MSNCT Rankings tab.

Our end-of-season May rankings can be found here: https://msqb.org/rankings/. Congrats to Greenhill A (TX) for having the top spot this season. If you have not already, we recommend you vote on Conor Thompson's postseason poll.

We hope to be back for more algorithmic rankings next season (hopefully in September this time, too!). As always, please let us know if you have questions/comments/concerns and things we can do next season at [email protected]. Thank you to everyone who has supported us this season!
