2021 NAQT Michigan State Championship [April 17th, IS-201]

Post by Woody »

DeWitt High School and the Michigan Quiz Bowl Coaches Association are excited to announce that we will be hosting an online State Championship for the state of Michigan.

DATE AND TIME:
The tournament will take place on April 17th, 2021. Start time 9:00am ET

REGISTRATION:
Teams can register using NAQT's registration system here:
https://www.naqt.com/registration/field ... t_id=12244

QUESTIONS/FORMAT:
This tournament will use NAQT's IS-201 question set, with a standard 20/20 TU/B format.
The tournament will take place over Zoom. Video will be required unless participants have received special permission otherwise.
Buzzing will happen via Buzzin.Live or an equivalent platform

There is a limit of 1 team per school for this tournament. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is no qualification restriction for participating in this tournament.

Only 6 distinct players per team may play in any given game, with 4 players per team playing at any given time, though there is no actual cap on the number of players allowed on a team's roster.

Teams will be divided into Class A, Class B, and a combined Class C/D division by their MHSAA Classification, using the "Enrollment Total" column found here: https://www.mhsaa.com/portals/0/documen ... enroll.pdf
Because of the unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and the way it has affected school enrollment, teams may petition to have their MHSAA Classification adjusted to reflect the actual enrollment numbers by submitting documentation of their current school enrollment to the tournament director by e-mailing jimmy.dunn [at] gmail.com

The tournament will have a preliminary round robin, likely consisting of 5 games, followed by lunch and a single or double elimination tournament bracket. The tournament bracket will likely consist of only the top third to top half of the initial field.

I recognize that running an elimination tournament is a controversial decision, but it was the majority decision of the MI QB Coaches Association, and was based on the fatigue that many have observed occurring for students in online tournaments, particularly those on losing teams. For future in-person iterations of the state tournament, my expectation is that we will use a double round robin format

PRIZES:
Note: If we get a large enough number of teams signing up in a given division, the prizes for 2nd and 3rd place may be upgraded to trophies/medals
Also,

For Class A and Class B divisions:

1st Place team for each division will receive a trophy, and a medal for each player (up to 6 players per team)
2nd Place team for each division will receive a plaque, and a certificate for each player (up to 6 players per team)
3rd Place team for each division will receive a plaque, and a certificate for each player (up to 6 players per team)

For the Class C/D division:

The above will hold true, except that if the 1st Place team is from Class C, then the top ranked team from Class D will also receive a trophy and a medal for each player, and vice versa. If that top ranked team from the non-winning class places in 2nd or 3rd place, then they will receive their class trophy instead of the standard prize for that position.

Additionally, if a prize-winning team has more than 6 players, they can optionally get more than 6 of the individual awards associated with their victory if their team is willing to pay the cost of those extra awards.

For individual awards:

Awards will be given based on a player's points per 20 tossups heard through the preliminary rounds. A player will only be eligible for an individual award if they have heard at least 75% of their team's total tossups heard. The top 5 players will be considered their individual Division's "First Team All-State" players and receive medals. The 6th through 10th ranked players will be considered their individual Division's "Second Team All-State" players and receive certificates.

FEES:
There is a flat fee of $95 per team for this tournament, and a $15/staffer discount, with a minimum fee of $50/team.
Checks can be addressed to

DeWitt High School
Attn: Quiz Bowl c/o Shawna Boyle
13601 Panther Drive
DeWitt, MI 48820

MODERATORS:
We are currently seeking staffers for this tournament. For staffers not affiliated with an attending team, the compensation amounts have not yet been finalized, but will likely be something in the realm of $15 for the prelim rounds, with the afternoon round compensation based on the number of rounds read. Staffers who have experience using TJ Sheets and that already have a premium Zoom account are preferred.

NOTE:
We are committed to ensuring that quiz bowl is safe, open, and welcoming for all participants. If at any point someone in this tournament makes you feel unsafe or unwelcome, please feel free to reach out to myself or any other staffers. Additionally, we strongly encourage the use of the quiz bowl misconduct form, which is a joint effort by PACE, NAQT, ACF, and IAC. The misconduct form can be accessed here: https://tinyurl.com/qbmisconduct

There is a Great Lakes STASH mirror (which is also open to Michigan teams) being held on April 17th, the same day as Michigan States.
4 Michigan Teams from 2 Michigan Schools have already signed up for that tournament.

Also, on the NAQT website, Michigan States is stated to be held on April 1st, not April 17th. Is this just an error on the website?

My apologies that this tournament conflicts with the GL STASH mirror, but April 17th was the only date that respondents from the MI QB Coaches Association unanimously selected from the 8 dates presented to them.

April 1st was always marked as a placeholder date within NAQT's registration system (not sure how visible this was on the front-end) and was updated overnight to reflect the actual date

Field has been updated. Registered coaches have also been sent an initial logistics e-mail with payment information. We are still expecting to get more entries (the hope is to have at least 12 teams per division)
