CANONINFLATION

Post by Santa Claus »

I’m excited to announce CANONINFLATION, the spiritual successor to CANONEXPANSION, as a side event for the summer after the next in-person season.

This tournament was inspired by the whimsy of Scattergories (in particular Will’s unabashed willingness to write many “packets” on things that personally interest him), as well as the successful experiment of CANONEXPANSION, though I cannot promise to emulate the quality of either of those sets.

Unlike its predecessor, there will be no such focus on “canonical” topics. All answerlines have been chosen based on the three-pronged test of “is this amusing”, “are the clues amusing”, and to a far lesser extent “is this something that people actually care about”; as a result it is incredibly extra-canonical (hence the name). Though I would love to point people towards any number of CANONEXPANSION’s questions (in particular “stir bars” stands out to me), I doubt any of my questions will reach that standard - instead, look to the “oozes” tossup of 2019 CO or the “clouds” tossup in 2020 WORKSHOP for more concrete examples of what I think is interesting.

The set is projected to have (at least) six packets of 20 tossups, of which roughly half are written. The (tentative) distribution is:
a lot of bio
quite a bit of chem
markedly less physics
heaps and loads of computer science
more than your average bear’s allotment of ocean science
a smidge of earth science
not all that much atmospheric science
less space science than some would like
a surprising amount of “math”, all things considered

Many questions will be assembled mish-mash from these categories. There will also be questions that focus on the history of modern science, but in explicit contrast to the science history found in 2019 CO and other sets that have attempted to make space for science history, there will be no clues from before the 20th century.

The projected difficulty of this set is “incredibly hard”. A rough breakdown:
A minority of these questions will be gettable at the end by players with solid science knowledge.
About half will be gettable at the end by good science players.
The majority will be gettable at the end by top science players.
The remainder will be ungettable by anyone, at any point.

There will be powermarks and super-powermarks; I will endeavour to make them indicate a consistent level of difficulty.

Specific details will be ironed out as the set progresses.

Are there any plans to play this online (maybe in duos)? Or is it delayed until the 2023 national tournaments?

currently planning on running after will’s film event - should start no earlier than 5 pm so feel free to wander until then

will update this post as time gets more concrete

UPDATE: film set going fast - set may start earlier if it doesn’t cause issues for anyone who plans to attend. Will say tentative 4:15 pm - let me know if this won’t work

UPDATE 2: set was read - things went well. Thanks to everyone who came :)

stats - format was a shootout with 30 point superpowers/20 point powers/10 point gets/0 point negs. also I let people rebuzz after FTP if they negged before it was read, meaning that in addition to these numbers there is some comical number of 0s (like honestly it might have been 100+)

Code: Select all

-------- 30 | 20 | 10 | total
Geoff 7 | 9 | 8 | 470
Adam 5 | 4 | 1 | 240
Eric M 5 | 4 | 1 | 240*
Dan 1 | 4 | 1 | 120
Andrew | 4 | 2 | 100
Swapnil 2 | 2 | | 100**
Ashvin 1 | 2 | 1 | 80
Conor | 4 | | 80
Ophir 1 | 1 | 2 | 70
Vishwa 1 | | 3 | 60
Billy | 3 | | 60
Shahar 1 | | 3 | 60
Raul | 1 | 2 | 40
Ankit 1 | | 1 | 40
Jerry 1 | | | 30
Eric B 1 | | | 30
Anderson 1 | | | 30
Kevin | | 1 | 10
* - Eric M had to leave after round 3 or so
** - I have it on my scoresheet that one of Swapnil's powers has an asterisk; honestly I don't remember why

fun facts:
  • there were 92 conversions, meaning only 8 q's went dead (though several conversions were particularly labored)
  • the overall scoreline was 28/38/26(/∞), so 72% of questions were powered or superpowered (this was many more than I expected); still, compare this to CANONEXPANSION, where players went 57/41/18 (+ 78 negs) across 120 tossups
