BHSAT XXX Available for Mirrors (Spring 2021)

Post by Zohar »

Yale Student Academic Competitions (YSAC) is pleased to announce BHSAT XXX, the 30th annual edition of Yale’s flagship high-school tournament. The set will be available for mirrors beginning Saturday, February 27, 2021.

Hasna Karim will head edit the set, with assistance from Stephen Eltinge, Michael Kearney, Daniel Ma, and Annabelle Yang. Both current and former members of YSAC will participate in the writing and editing process.

Difficulty
The difficulty of this year’s BHSAT will aim at the “core” of an advanced high school curriculum, much like BHSAT sets of years past (we expect the set to be slightly more difficult than last year’s). In short, the set should conform to the typical “regular-plus” high school difficulty.

Set details
The set will consist of fourteen (14) packets of equal difficulty (no special "finals" packets). Tossups will be five to six lines long in 10 point Times New Roman before powermarking. No bonus part will be longer than two lines. All tossups will be powermarked. Host sites must agree not to modify, subtract from, add to, or edit the set. We are certainly open to any reasonable changes (e.g. playing the set without powers)—just send me an email at [email protected].

Each packet will feature an extra tossup and bonus for use as tiebreakers and/or replacements.

Distribution
4/4 Literature (1/1 American; 1/1 British; 1/1 European; .5/.5 World; .5/.5 Classical & Miscellaneous)
4/4 History (1/1 American; 2/2 European/British/Ancient; 1/1 "World"; Canadian/Australian where appropriate in context)
4/4 Science (1/1 biology; 1/1 chemistry; 1/1 physics; 1/1 other science, including math, though no computational math is included)
3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 Visual; 1/1 Auditory, including jazz; 1/1 "audiovisual"—ballet, film, opera—and "usable"—architecture, design, ceramics, etc.)
1/1 "Thought" (approximately .5/.5 each Social Science and Philosophy)
1/1 Religion
1/1 Mythology & Culture
1/1 Geography & Current Events
1/1 Pop Culture & Trash

Mirrors
If you are interested in mirroring BHSAT XXX, please email me at [email protected], “cc’ing” [email protected]. We are happy to have BHSAT used at singles tournaments, state All-Star tryouts, etc.—just email us at the above addresses.

We anticipate the coronavirus pandemic will continue to necessitate remote tournament attendance into the spring season. In light of this, we are aiming for regional online mirrors; we will allow hosts to make reasonable exceptions for out-of-region teams who would not otherwise be able to play the set. Should the public health situation improve, we may shift to allowing in-person mirrors as well.

The mirror fee is $10 per non-house team in attendance at the tournament, with mirror payment possible via check or Venmo. In the case of multiple bids in the same area, we will show preference for hosts who demonstrate their capacity for outreach to a wide range of teams in their area.

Code of Conduct
In order to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all tournament participants, we will send hosts a code of conduct outlining our expectations for acceptable behavior. We ask that hosts distribute it to all teams before their mirror and enforce it for the duration of the tournament.

N.B.
This set is not to be distributed electronically by anyone except the editors of the set. Paper copies may be given out to tournament attendees by tournament directors, but requests for electronic copies of packets should be submitted to [email protected], “cc’ing” [email protected]. Tournaments may be run on electronic packets, but recipients of electronic copies are not permitted to share them. Please do not discuss any question content publicly until BHSAT mirrors have concluded for the year.

We hope you'll help us make BHSAT a nationwide success again in Spring 2021. Please contact me at [email protected] to secure a mirror in your region. Thanks!

Pending any further mirror requests (e.g. for the summer), the set will be posted on Saturday, June 19.

Update: We have received a request for a July online mirror, and so will not be posting the set for now.
