I am proud to introduce the New Jersey Middle Academic League, the newest way to play middle school quiz bowl in New Jersey.
Dates: Currently, we are planning on having two sessions throughout our two seasons, one on Tuesday and one on Wednesdays. Dates are here. Matches will be from 7-9 PM EST/EDT
Season 1 (Fall):
October: Wednesday, October 14th, Tuesday, October 27th
November: Wednesday, November 18th, Tuesday, November 10th
December: Wednesday, December 2nd, Tuesday, December 8th
January: Tuesday, January 5th, Wednesday, January 27th
Season 2 (Spring)
February: Tuesday, February 23rd, Wednesday, February 17th
March: Tuesday, March 23rd, Wednesday, March 3rd
April: Tuesday April 20th, Wednesday April 14th
May: Tuesday May 11th, Wednesday May 5th
Finals: Saturday May 15th.
Sets:
We will be using ERIS for season 1. You can read more about ERIS here. Season 2 will be using questions produced by SAGES Quizbowl Questions, which is led by Alex Dzurick.
Field cap:
Currently, there will be a field cap of 32 teams. If I can get more staff and/or if there is demand, that number can be raised to 64. Interested staffers can email me at [email protected], put their names in the spreadsheet, or message me on Discord. We will pay $25 to staffers.
Eligibility:
People who will be in 8th grade or younger during the 2020-2021 season who live in the state of New Jersey are eligible. Teams must be composed of people from the same school.
Format:
The Format will be as follows. One day a month, a team will play 3 full tossup/bonus games. In Season 1, brackets will be seeded and all teams will be in contention for the championship. In Season 2, the field from season 1 will be split in two. If it is possible, we will have the upper division on one of the weekdays on the calendar and the lower division on the other day. The Top 8 in the Upper Division at the end of Season 2 will battle it out in the finals to determine the championship.
Medium:
We will be using Zoom for this tournament. Each Reader, if their institution provides Zoom, will create their own room, the link of which will be emailed to the teams on the day of each meet. If their institution does not provide zoom, that reader will be split into a breakout room from the main host. For buzzing, we are planning on using the COBA Online Buzzer System.
Payment:
Will be done through Venmo, PayPal or Check. The tournament will be $65 per season, or $120 for the two seasons if signed up for at once and discounts can be provided if a team provides staffers. As we get closer to the tournament, I will email you the info for the methods.
Registration:
Teams can register via this google form. Teams can be composed of 1-4 players. Staff can sign up at this spreadsheet. For Fall and full season discount, the registration deadline is October 4th, 2020, for Spring, it will be January 26th, 2021.
We look forward to seeing you this year on Zoom!
