Hanover Junior Challenge II [MS-24] — 12/16, Hanover, N.H.

Post by deserto »

The Hanover High School Quizbowl Club is pleased to announce it will be hosting the second iteration of the Hanover Junior Challenge on Saturday, December 16, 2017. The tournament will take place at HHS's campus, 41 Lebanon St., Hanover, N.H., beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending by 5 p.m.

The HJC is intended as a fun, social introduction to quizbowl, a team-based competition played on questions drawn from the full range of academic disciplines: history, science, and literature feature prominently in the question distribution, as do geography, current events, and fine arts.

Quizbowl is likely to appeal to academically minded students and those who have enjoyed participating in other academic competitions, such as MATHCOUNTS, the National Geographic Bee, the National History Bee and Bowl, the National Science Bowl, and the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Teams compete head-to-head and may field up to four students at a time, with the opportunity to substitute alternates at the half and during timeouts. Schools are welcome, and encouraged, to register more than one team. All students yet to graduate from eighth grade are eligible to compete.

The HJC will be played on questions produced by National Academic Quiz Tournaments, a leading supplier of academic competition questions. Specifically, we'll be using NAQT's MS-24 set. In addition, the top 15 percent of teams at the HJC will qualify for NAQT's 2018 Middle School National Championship Tournament, scheduled for the weekend of May 11-13 in Rosemont, Ill.

NAQT questions come in two forms: three- to four-line-long "tossup" questions, and three-part bonus questions. Players must press their signaling device (similar to those used on Jeopardy!) before they may answer a tossup question. When a player answers a tossup correctly, she earns a set of three bonus questions on which she may confer with her teammates. Each question is worth 10 points, though players receive five extra points — a "power" — for correctly answering tossups within roughly the first half of the question.

NAQT's full rules are posted here, and I will provide a straightforward summary on the morning of the tournament. The HJC will depart from NAQT rules in one key respect: rounds will be untimed and consist of 20 tossups each.

The tournament registration fee is $60 per team. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 13, and payment is due the morning of the tournament. I'll be glad to provide invoices, upon request.

Free parking is available in any of several lots ringing the school. For an added cost of $20 each, teams may reserve sixteen-inch cheese pizzas for lunch. Alternatively, teams may bring their own lunches or visit one of several nearby eateries. I'll give more logistical details in an email to all registered teams in the run-up to the tournament.

If you're ready to register, would like to express tentative interest, or have any questions or concerns, shoot me a message.

We hope you'll join us in Hanover next month!

Advanced Math and Science Academy (Marlborough, Mass.) overcame a disadvantage in the HJC final to win the title. Richmond A (Hanover, N.H.) placed second. One-man team Anjo Therattil led the way in individual scoring, amassing 141 points per 20 tossups heard across his five preliminary rounds. Congrats to all teams, and a special shout-out to first-time quizbowl participants Hampstead Academy. Stats here.
