Greatest Announcing Calls Bracket

Post by Cheynem »

Your next March Madness bracket: the greatest sports calls.

While I've looked at a few lists and tried to hit the uber-famous calls, I've also thrown quite a few vanity calls, some calls from the Awful Announcing school of entertainment, and some stuff that only Minnesota people like. I stayed away from a few sports I know nothing about, such as soccer, although one, infamous soccer call is included. YouTube links included.

The seeding is more or less random, although yeah, all the Boston homer calls are in one regional, and one regional has all the Minnesota announcers going nuts.

Voting should be done, let's say in about a week.

I SEE YOU REGIONAL
#1 Miracle On Ice (Al Michaels, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYscemhnf88) vs. #16 Where's Wright Waters?! (Dave Lamont, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9REY0kS1Ek)
#2 Go Crazy, Folks (Jack Buck, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVVAf_fY5a0) vs. #15 The Mays Catch (Jack Brickhouse, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dK6zPbkFnE)
#3 I Don't Believe What I Just Saw (Jack Buck, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZzGkoXlaTM--not the greatest clip) vs. #14 COLD...BLOODED (Gus Johnson, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2TtyeXgYM8)
#4 Spectacular Move by Michael Jordan (Marv Albert, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT1yNyRwd7w) vs. #13 Secretariat (Chic Anderson, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V18ui3Rtjz4)
#5 MAY DAY MAY DAY (Rick Jeanneret, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otGhTszcS3s) vs. #12 Jordan Crawford (Gus Johnson, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVEIeD91vIc--at 1:20)
#6 Yes, Sir (Verne Lundquist, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37Fw4r2Ft5k at 6:20) vs. #11 By George (Verne Lundquist, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGHQ6xpnahI)
#7 Holy Mackerel (Al McGuire, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9coEYtnDeA) vs. #10 Johnny the Jet Rodgers (Lyell Bremser, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtzRZxnVLU4)
#8 Look at Mills (Dick Bank, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOj0zjPzg-c) vs. #9 Holy Roller (Bill King, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y1SeAjv5ao)

That's a good one, but I'm deeply disappointed that this didn't make the cut. (Also, for context.)

Mike and I have agreed that there will be a full soccer corollary to this bracket, and that one will definitely have a high seed.

This is the kind of thing I can go for. I will have to watch 63 of the 64 to come up with my picks ( you, Matteau), but I can say at a glance that "Get your big butt outta here! He does!" is criminally underseeded. Further, any analysis or other prepared call that is not "heat of the moment" is almost sure to get no love from me.

Even as a Chelsea fan and a non-northerner I have to say it's pretty clear-cut that the Castleford commentary is miles ahead of the Nevillegasm.

Yesterday's featured article on en.wikipedia was cricket commentator Jonathan Agnew, which ought to have drawn worldwide attention to the stand-out winner the last time this poll was conducted publicly in the UK. Supposedly the mass public hilarity caused by this radio broadcast caused a two-mile traffic jam on the London orbital motorway.

Few things are as uniquely British as two cricket radio commentators giggling and desperately trying to maintain proper composure in the wake of an accidental use of a euphemism that doesn't exist in American English.

I SEE YOU REGIONAL
#1 Miracle On Ice (great #1 seed)
#2 Go Crazy, Folks (the Mays catch was a better play, and Brickhouse is a great announcer, but this was a better call)
#3 I Don't Believe What I Just Saw (why all the Jack Buck in one bracket?)
#13 Secretariat (Strangely, I never grow tired of watching and hearing one of the greatest massacres in American sports history)
#5 MAY DAY MAY DAY (meh)
#6 Yes, Sir (the Bear is out of hibernation!)
#7 Holy Mackerel (meh)
#8 Look at Mills (one of the more underrated moments in US sports history, and it was a decent call for the era and for the sport)

STOP IT, MIGGY REGIONAL
#1 The Giants Win the Pennant (might be the best ever).
#2 Havlicek Stole the Ball (meh)
#14 Typical Hawk Harrelson (even if you hate the Hawk's guts ... the man moves people to emotions which is more than I can say about most announcers .. also, if you are going to put in Hawk, you could have at least put in his call of DeWayne Wise's catch to save Buehrle's perfect game ... that was the man's finest hour, and easily beats over half of the calls in this bracket of 64)
#4 New Home Run Champion (Milo did a good job with this ... and he must have known he had to get this one right because it would live forever)
#12 Joe Carter (I found this the toughest call, but I go with the Joe Carter call because it was more of a positive event, vs. Buckner, a very good men I've met twice, having to live with that his whole life).
#11 The Double (Dave Niehaus is one of the most underrated guys to have ever called the game, and this might have been his finest hour).
#10 Appalachian State Win (Do you need a better reason than somebody embarrassing Michigan in their oversized cement tomb? I didn't think so.)
#9 Run Lindsey (meh)

COUNTRY STRONG REGIONAL
#1 We'll See You Tomorrow Night (One of the best non-calls ever).
#2 Down Goes Frazier (vintage Cosell ... a complete overexaggeration of what was going on, and we love it)
#3 With No Regard for Human Life (one of the few funny calls here that is worthwhile)
#4 This is Not Detroit, Man (I'm not sure what language the other video was in, but I could barely understand it, so I go with this other fairly nonsensical one)
#12 The Butler Did It Again (meh)
#6 Paul Allen is Mad (mildly humerous)
#7 River City Relay Aftermath (This would be funny except the pain comes through so well in the call)
#9 Tiger Woods (Verne Lundquist's vocal cords belong in the Smithsonian)

MR. SNAPPY REGIONAL
#1 The Band is Out on the Field (The call is almost as energetic and chaotic as the play on the field ... the one seeds were all good picks)
#2 Music City Miracle (You, know, they were right, there were no flags on the field, and it was a miracle. For an emotional rant, it was factually correct)
#14 Johnny Most Hates Detroit (Johnny Most, like the Music City Miracle is emotional but also factually correct, and that earns cred from me)
#4 MATTEAU MATTEAU (Couldn't understand more than 2-3 words in the other video, so this one gets a default vote)
#5 Send It In, Jerome! (meh)
#6 Hail Flutie (Dan was right ... Flutie DID do it)
#7 The Catch (For two major figures, I found these disappointing calls, but I found Scully's call easier to follow)
#8 Jackie Smith Dropped Pass (meh)

Definitely some great hockey calls that didn't make it, three of my favourite: "A dream has come true/After 22 years...Raymond Bourque!", "Off the floor! On the board! Paul Kariya!", "CAN YOU. BELIEVE. WHAT WE. JUST SAW?/"Patrik Stefan, you should be embarrassed for what you just did. That does not belong in the National Hockey League

#1 Miracle on Ice. Iconic. Is the #16 entry, to some extent, the origin of the "I will fight any one of you" meme?
#2 Go Crazy.
#14 Cold Blooded. Buck's call is great, but it's not even the best call of that play!
#4 Spectacular Move.
#5 MAY DAY. Sheer joy, and an amazing
#11 By George. If I have to pick a Verne Lundquist moment here.
#10 Johnny Rodgers. "Man, woman, and child!" Midwestern college football, everybody.
#9 Holy Roller. "Madden is on the field. He wants to know if it's real. They said, 'Yes, get your big butt out of here.' He does!" and that might not even be the best line of the rant. It's a damn shame this will go out in the second round.

#1 The Giants win the pennant!
#15 Nuts and bolts. Simply amazing. The color commentator jumping in to yell "FOOTBALL! HORRIBLE!" is A++.
#14 Hawk Harrelson. Sportscasting needs more of this hilarious homerism and over-the-top reaction.
#4 New Home Run Champion. Nope, I take it back. Anything ESPN does for college football, we need less of it.
#12 Joe Carter. This is a 12-seed!? This is ICONIC!
#11 The Double. Sports > Not Sports.
#10 App State.
#9 PE v JT. From "Bingo, bango, bongo" to "I wanna throw up", it's four minutes of pure poetry.

#1 Tomorrow Night. Joe Buck has mimicked this call twice, but the original stands alone.
#15 Having an Earthquake. Incredibly on the ball, and he was shutting up Tim McCarver which is always a plus.
#14 McGwire's 61st. I was about to go for "No Regard" until I got to the "Pardon me while I stand and applaud" line. Classic Jack Buck.
#13 They Think It's All Over. The problem with Paul Allen's "I can't believe what I just saw" call is that 100% you can tell in his voice he believes it.
#5 On the Dunk.
#6 Paul Allen. CAUGHT! TOUCHDOWN! NO! NO!
#7 River City Relay.
#9 In your life!

#1 The Band is on the field!
#2 Music City Miracle
#3 The slipper still fits! In the absence of OH STOKLEY!, this will have to be the most Gus Johnson moment in the bracket.
#13 Larry Munson. I have no idea what's going on here, but it's not the friggin' Rangers, so I'll vote for it.
#5 Jerome.
#6 Flutie.
#10 Hello Heisman.
#8 Sickest Man in America.

Yeah for a long time I thought Tom Cheek's call was super iconic and famous but I've rarely met people who remember it, so that's why it's a 12 seed. I'll tabulate these results tonight (you can still vote). I am counting the incomplete ballots.

#9 Holy Roller. There's probably a bit of the fact that we've heard Michaels's call for almost four decades that cheapens how great it is. Still, I wanna make sure Holy Roller doesn't get shut out.
#2 Go Crazy, Folks!
#3 I Don't Believe. Still not as great as Scully's call. Sometimes a moment needs nothing more than the roar of the crowd.
#5 MAY DAY MAY DAY. Back when Buffalo had a competent sports team.

#1 The Giants win the pennant!
#10 App State.
#14 Hawk Harrelson. Just funny.
#12 Touch 'em all, Joe. Aaron's home run is bigger, even than a World Series ender, but the call on Carter's is great.

#1 Tomorrow Night.
#7 River City Relay. Of all the "repeat the same phrase over and over again" calls, "Down goes Frazier" may be my least favorite.
#3 No Regard.
#4 This is Not Detroit. The better Paul Allen call got knocked out, so I'll keep this one alive.

#1 The Band is out on the field! Amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-wrending, exciting, thrilling!
#2 Music City Miracle. The color commentator's "He's got something... HE'S GOT SOMETHING!"
#3 The slipper still fits!
#12 Al Harrington. It's not the Rangers, so I'll vote for it.
