Dunbar loses most of it's varsity-Victor, Tian, Amit, Sagar and myself (Papa)
In addition, Dean has retired as well.

Pavitra and all the JV starters will be on Varsity next year.

Madisonville lost Jeremy and Michael. I wouldn't be too concerned with that. Our team couldn't get much worse than last year. Priscilla, Matthew, myself and several other players are returning. The potential is there, but no one on our team wants to study.

What about any upcoming freshmen? As far as Pikeville goes, I think we may have only had two eighth graders for middle school, though it's possible they'll stick with it through high school.

Along with our eighth graders, I believe we have some transferring from other schools as well.

Well, Shikha and I were on the Derby Challenge team this spring. You're probably talking about Shikha if she was getting the science and math, ha. She is good, and probably will be better once she gets a little more experience. We had a young team this past year.

After just getting home from ACE at Milligan, I'm pretty proud of the Kentucky players that made a showing there. Faiyad from JCHS got second in the science tournament, I believe, with Jack getting third in lit and myself getting second. Brad from JCHS made it to the final 10 in the social studies (he may have made it to second or third, I don't remember), and some Dunbar players made it to the final 10 in their subjects as well. Considering teams like Dorman were also at Milligan, I think we did fairly well.

Of course, they don't seem to be putting up the results of the final tournaments on the ACE website, so I can't remember any other names. My apologies.

Are any of you guys going to Vandy, or other out of state tourneys?
Lastly, how are the JV teams looking out there, I know Dunbar and Pike and Russell are gonna be good, any others??

I imagine we'll be at Vandy this fall. It's one of the few tournaments we make a point to go to (boo lack of funds!). Brookwood we may or may not go to, seeing as it's on the same weekend as the JV Challenge and quite a few of our Varsity players are sophomores this coming year.

Scott if you're looking for a Governor's Cup format tournament I'd like to invite you to Fleming County for our tournament on Jan. 10 2009.

Emily, Aaron, Mr. Knupp, Coach K, Andrew, you're all invited back. I tried to send out preliminary info before school was out, and will be sending something once school is back in session. I hope that I've avoided conflicts with other tournaments.

The details are pretty much the same: $60 for the first team, $30 for each additional team, bring a buzzer and an official, pool play will lead to single elimination, there will be "A" and "B" team brackets.

I am also looking into some additional question sources to try and reduce some of the overly simple stuff we had last year. I think I can mix questions from a couple of different sources to make for a more representative sample.

Hope to see all of you there.

ATTN: EASTERN KY TEAMS!!!
-Could one of you kids post dates and venues for this year's EKAC competitions. I'd like to come out to some of the tournaments this year. Maybe even assist.
-Also, if any teams would like to scrimmage and would like a washed up college grad who is having quiz bowl withdrawals to play against just let me know. =P Honestly, I think it would be a cool idea if a few teams (I've got in mind JCCHS, Pikeville, PCCHS) could get together and have little scrimmage tournaments on weekends when there are no tournaments. I say this because I would like to play in them. =D Maybe have coaches and any others participate. I know I'd love to see myself and some coaches go against the new generation of EKY quizbowlers. Anyway, just an idea I though would be cool. Tell your coaches and see what they say.

As far as goods teams go, I have only seen Pikeville so far. They scrimmaged me and some of the alumni. We (myself, Sam Keathley, Ben Stewart, Austin Coleman) squeaked by with a narrow victory. However, there are some aspects of that scrimmage that should be taken into account...

1. There was no math. I'm not sure who this would have favored. They claim to be very weak at math; however, I think our alumni team could've managed well. So Pikeville might perform worse against a strong math team that is average in other categories.
2. The question set we played on was both pyramidal and written by the coach. As we know, play on pyramid and quick recall questions can hardly be compared. While Pikeville did well on those pyramid questions they may not do as well at quick-paced questions. Also, the coach claimed that the Pikeville students hadn't heard the packet he had written (which I don't doubt), but they probably had some advatage seeing that they are used to his style. The information in the questions were probably heard beforehand by the students as well. In all fairness though, our player, Ben, is the son of that coach and probably had the same advantage as those students, if not more.
3. Depth of knowledge. This might sound weird, but I noticed the Pikeville team in that scrimmage knew a lot of obscure stuff but not a lot of easy stuff. They were answering things scarily quick as far as obscure battles go and works of literature, but when it came to rather basic quiz bowl stuff (for example, black man who replaced Jefferson Davis in Mississippi Senate) they blanked.

My conclusion is that I cannot draw a conclusion yet about how good they are. But they are definitely good; it's a matter of determining the level of "goodness." Perhaps the information that I provided you is somewhat helpful, however, I need to see them play on a neutral set with math in order to make a better call.

Most quiz bowl does contain math, mostly theory/history as opposed to computational. However, KY Governor's Cup does incorporate computation, and that tournament still seems to be the most important tournament for various reasons for most schools around KY (yes, perhaps even more important than PACE or NAQT). So, to get an idea of how teams are going to perform on the typical KY format it is a good idea to get a sense of a team's math knowledge. That is why it would be nice to see the aforementioned team play on a set with math.

October 18 at Sheldon Clark
November 22 at Pike Central
December 6 at Paintsville

There's also an EKAC tournament January 8 and 13 here at Pikeville. I have dates for Region and District Gov Cup, but no locations yet.

Eric is more or less correct in his assessment from that game, speaking as one of the students in that scrimmage. We hadn't heard the packet before. As to being weak at math, I wouldn't necessarily agree. Shikha is by no means bad. However, we do have a shortage of math and science players. And as to the random knowledge, while blanking on basics... yeah, I have to agree. We seem to have two types of players here: those who learned by lists and word association, and those who learned by reading Sparknotes, Wikipedia, etc. The majority of those in that scrimmage (Thomas, Max, Jack, and me) learned by reading rather than strict memorization. I can only really speak for myself, but I don't learn things based on "buzz words," which I think is what you were talking about by "basic quizbowl stuff." Just one person's style, I guess.

And yes... Governor's Cup quick recall is 1/5 computational math. Yes, it probably is more important than PACE or NAQT around here. I hadn't even heard of PACE or NAQT until the end of my freshman year.

Thanks for the dates. I think I will try to make it out to the last two.

And the "buzz words" isn't exactly what I was talking about. It's just that I think a question about "Hiram Revels" should be easier to answer than a lot of the other stuff you guys got correct. But hey, I guess if you don't know it then you don't know it. It happens.

I agree on your study techniques. It's much better to do it that way than to try to memorize a list. Most of the things you can learn from lists won't come until the end of a (good) question. Therefore, it makes more sense to learn more in depth info so you can get it before all the list-learners engage in the infamous buzzer race.

We would love to have you come by your old stomping ground at PHS and scrimmage against our team. Perhaps, your team could consist of the PHS coaches and you against the varsity team. I would certainly love to play!!! Perhaps, we can also arrange some scrimmages with other local teams as well.

We have QR practice Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from about 3:15 PM until about 5:00 PM. You are welcome to come by anytime.

By the way, ACE Quiz Bowl Camp and the KAAC Middle School camp are separate venues. We have attended ACE in the past though it always required travel to Missouri, South Carolina or Tennessee. An ACE camp in Kentucky, if not too distant from Eastern Kentucky, would certainly be more appealing.

I hope to see you some afternoon at our practice.

east of I-65 and south of I-64 and with I-75 as the eastern limit. I am still working on it. Should know for sure by Oct 1.
