I'll play with you, as long as you don't mind having a not very good teammate.

I'll be playing with Charlie Dees.

And from what I hear, Sorice is going to play with Yaphe.

I am currently on the list as a free agent and a staffer. Since there is still an odd number of players in the free agent pool, I think it would be best if I were removed from there and kept only in the staff section.

Currently, my understanding is that the following teams are playing the lit doubles:

Evan Adams/Chris Ray
Billy Beyer/Chris Borglum
Rob Carson/Guy Tabachnick
Chris Carter/Dan Puma
Nick Clusserath/Todd Faulkenberry
Freddy DeAngelis/George Stevens
Charlie Dees/Greg Peterson
Trevor Davis/Gautam Kandlikar
Ted Gioia/Eric Kwartler
Andrew Hart/Ray Luo
Tim Hartman/Rom Masrour
Matt Lafer/Ryan Westbrook
Trygve Meade/Matt Weiner
Mike Sorice/Andrew Yaphe
Seth Teitler/Selene Koo

There's still room for more teams; post here or email me at jmagin AT umd DOT edu to sign up. Also, for dinner, I'm leaning towards ordering food like last year; it doesn't have to be pizza again, but I don't think there will be time to allow people to go have a leisurely dinner after CO.

The schedule will almost assuredly be a bracketed round robin followed by bracketed playoffs; I believe that I have enough moderators, but if you want to staff and haven't already posted in this thread or emailed me about it, please do so.

I am still a free agent, and looking for a teammate if anyone else wants to play. I can also just show up to the tournament and see if anyone needs a teammate there, or play solo if there is an odd number. My e-mail is [email protected]

I believe that the team of Jacob Durst and Brendan Byrne has registered, leading me to cap the field at 16 teams. If more people want to play, get in touch with me and I'll see about allowing three-person teams (like the one at the IO Literature tournament). The tournament will be 10 dollars per person; there will be 2 brackets of 8 teams each, and we'll play 7 prelim games before rebracketing into 4 playoff brackets of 4 and playing 3 playoff games. There will then be a final, if necessary; there will also be a packet provided of the 20 hardest tossups that were cut for difficulty reasons.

If people have any questions, please email me or post in this thread.

To whom should I write my check for the entry fees? I prefer to write personal checks so that I can submit cancelled ones to UIC Campus Programs for hopeful reimbursement. Ironically, ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education) does not accept checks from teachers who are renewing their teaching certificates. Did an Illinois teacher bounce a check once in the 1990s? I can also donate a half dozen new paperback classic novels as prizes to the top scorers/teams.

Re: Chicago Open Literature Doubles

Congratulations for Andrew Yaphe and Mike Sorice for winning the 2008 Chicago Open Literature Doubles in impressive fashion. I hope all the teams enjoyed the questions, despite the lateness of the hour. I'd like to thank Bruce Arthur, Katy Peters, Carsten Gehring, Jeremy Eaton, Mike Bentley, Eric Mukherjee, Ahmad Ragab, and Arnav Moudgil for staffing (if I've forgotten anyone, please let me know). Also, I'd like to thank Donald Taylor for doing a wonderful job with the stats. Finally, I'd like to thank my fellow writers Ahmad, Eric, Dave Letzler, Dennis Jang, and Shantanu Jha for their many excellent questions; it was both a delight and an honor to work with them.

I apologize for some rounds not having 20 tossups; that was entirely my fault, and should have been corrected. Hopefully, that didn't dampen anyone's enjoyment of the tournament. I'm going to clean up the packets a little (ensuring that each has the correct number of tossups, removing repeats, etc) before publicly releasing the set in the next couple of days. If anyone wants to give me (or the other writers) feedback on the set, please email me at jonathan.magin AT gmail DOT com. Also, I am very interested in seeing players' reactions to this tournament, so go ahead and post in the discussion thread started by Dave.

Once again, creating this tournament was really fun; thanks everyone involved who made it such a successful event.
