Feldman was saying that he was going to have you on his team, but Feldman does have a habbit of saying people are on his team without asking them first.

And yeah, I got your message Dan. I just forgot to add you to the list. I'll do that now.

So this is going to happen then (I got worried with the dearth of information). I'll play with you since it seems like my parents have decided that I shouldn't be playing with strangers from Virginia.

Better to play with strangers from your own neck of the woods, eh? And sorry that no one has been keeping in touch with you about this. Word to the wise: in any similar situation in the future, you'd do a lot better to contact me rather than my esteemed teammate. Speaking of which...

No biggie, 'nick. It's just that I'd heard second-hand that you would be coming with us. Was this possible? Or maybe my teammate was a bit tipsy when she relayed the message (more likely).

She gave me your yahoo email address, although I didn't get a reply, so I've been using her as a go between.

However, unless some travel costs discounts are apparent, there's no way I can make it as my family and I are extremely strapped for cash (Lower-Middle class is where its at.)

Here's the e-mail message I just sent out to teams:

---

Maryland Sun ‘n Fun Mirror Update

Hey everyone, if you’re receiving this e-mail it means I have you signed up as playing on a team at Maryland’s Sun ‘n Fun Mirror this Saturday.

Registration for the tournament will be from 8:30 – 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 21st in 0105 Jimenez Hall (the usual place for our college tournaments). There is a possibility that this could be moved on the day of the event in case we have some issues with scheduling, but we hope not to have that happen. If we do move registration, we will post signs and have people by Jimenez to direct you where to go.

In terms of parking, you will want to park in Lot 1 or one of the other parking lots past the Stamp Student Union (and Jimenez) on Campus Drive. Make sure to look at the sign when you park to ensure that you can park there for free without getting a ticket. Please consult the campus map at http://www.parking.umd.edu/themap/ if you are unsure as to where to park.

We’ll announce lunch options at the tournament, but they will essentially consist of a limited number of food places open in the Stamp Student Union across the street from Jimenez, and a wider variety of restaurants on Route 1.

The field for the tournament currently looks like this (updated 6/18):
VCU (1)
Charter (1)
Feldman, Puma, Tabachnick, Gioia (1)
Brown (1)
WUSTL and Friend (1)
Caltech All-Stars (1)
Team Laferbrook (1)
Maggie Walker (1)
Maryland (1)
Shantanu, Daichi, Adam Marshall (1)
Ian Eppler et al (1)

That gives us 10 teams, and we have 12 packets to work with. My preferred format would be to play the most number of rounds possible, and the best idea I’ve come up with is to run a round robin of 9 rounds and then do a 3 round playoff. This will mean there won’t be any packets for a final, though. If anyone has any better solutions, feel free to suggest them to me.

We will be reading the tournament on laptops, so it would be nice if one person from a team could bring a laptop in case we have any issues with the staff laptops.

In case anything happens on Saturday, please give me a call (e-mail me for my number). The reception in Jimenez is notoriously bad, but I’ll try to go outside a few times and check my messages.

See everyone on Saturday,
Mike Bentley

Why not do split RR, take top two from each, use PPB as a tiebreaker among the 3rd place teams, then another split RR followed by a final?

This would introduce two byes into the tournament (or hard to balance cross-bracket play) which I don't think I want to do.

Now that Ian Eppler's team has joined, we have 11 teams in the tournament. Assuming this number holds, would people prefer to do a full round robin followed by a final (potentially ACF style if we can get another packet) or to break things up into two brackets followed by a definite ACF style final? Unless we get a 12th team, the second option will mean that some teams will probably have to have 2 byes in the tournament but will allow for teams to play more games against similarly matched teams and to have an ACF final.

Sorry for the extremely late notice but Dartmouth is interested in sending a team to this tournament. In the interest of full disclosure, we have to add that there is a chance that we won't be able to make it because of work commitments, but we will be trying our best to show up.

Since we are coming in from the NY area that morning on Amtrak, we were wondering what the best way to get to College Park from either Baltimore or DC.

Thanks.

You can very easily get to College Park from either of those places. For Baltimore, take the Camden Line to the College Park metro Station. From DC (assuming you get to Union Station), you head to the same place (which is on the Green Line). I believe the UMD shuttle from the metro station to campus does not run on weekends during the summer, but someone going to this tournament could probably pick you up. I'm not sure about that since I don't really take the metro to campus/go in on weekends, so someone else should probably confirm. If that is the case, I am probably available to ferry people over the course of 1-2 trips, depending on how many you guys are bringing. Email me if you finalize the plans and need a ride.

I don't think the Camden Line runs on weekends. Union Station to the Metro is your best bet.

Yeah the shuttle to campus from the College Park Metro station is almost certainly not running on Saturday and Sunday mornings in the summer, but someone will be picking up Andrew Lim anyways so they can probably squeeze in the other Dartmouth people. Give me an e-mail to work things out.

By the way, we could still use some extra staffers for this tournament. If you're in the DC area and want some free lunch, please let me know.
