They are consolation rounds. I'm glad an effort is being made, but really--do we need to be splitting hairs for the consolation rounds? I guess "consolation champion" is better than nothing, but really. Just play and have fun.

That's not really a valid response, though - if there's going to be consolation playoffs, why shouldn't they be done right? There's nothing wrong with pointing out possible issues with the playoff structure, even if it's "just" for the consolation rounds.

This will be my first exposure to Swiss Pairs, and so I am still unclear about the theory behind it to a bit. Still, the two links I provided earlier give more insight into it than I could.

Consolation rounds started at around 9:00 am. We are using SQBS4.0 and will be keeping up with team stats there. Individual stats will be kept for Daichi and Dan.

142 playoff ppg by Chris Ray is the (record) for individual scoring. We do mention the score in the table of records.

Dallas pulls out 210 in round 9 against Brookwood. That's another to put into the "individual performances in a game" list. On averages after 2 rounds, Simons 170, Dees 165.

So far this is like Dan and Dave for now. In the AHAN section is Fred's comments on the Dorman-MLK playoff game.

Dorman taking 80% on its bonuses and 82% of all possible steals. Insane.

There were no upsets in consolation round 8.

Accidentally gave out R10 instead of R9, but since I gave it to everyone, no worries.

So are the last two rounds just single-elimination semis and finals? Seems a bit unfair for Dorman to be eliminated from title contention for their first loss at the hands of TJ, which has lost twice over the course of the tournament and once in the playoff RR.

One of the tightest games I have EVER played in my life. Congrats to our good friends from Whitman, who take home a well-deserved championship by winning PACE, and thanks guys for that awesome 360-360 game that kept me dangerously close to dying of ventricular fibrillation  I can't wait until next year's quizbowl season...

I am hard pressed to imagine a more felicitous or idoneous way to end my high school quizbowl career. That the victory was so narrow is a worthy testament to a phenomenal TJ team. Phil, Mohit, Keshav, thanks for a great year of competition and some slightly disturbing memories; Naren, you're going to be absolutely terrifying next year.

My only real regret is that we never played Dorman's A team at either national tournament.

We could not have done it without Huizong. Who I think earned both his medals in full.

CHYEAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHITMAN! It was extremely gratifying to see them "kick some ass." TJ played extremely well, and I have to thank them and Whitman for one of the most exciting quizbowl matches I've ever seen.

I think a real quizbowl match between "the metro area" versus "places that suck" would have been pretty interesting. I have to imagine that this year's all-stars were among the best ever, mostly because the abundance of good/excellent one-man teams and the existance of Shantanu seem like fairly new phenomena. Can the PACE people study and see if this would be possible next year?

In the all-star game, the teams were between the DC area and everyone else. Noted ROBOT Evan Silberman wrote down our team as "people from places that suck".

I believe the DC area was being referred to and the claim was that all other places sucked. I'm inclined to believe this was playful regional pride and no need for alarm. Still, your vigilance is appreciated.

Well, those of us who stayed for the all-star game were treated to the "beltway Insiders" versus the visiting "Places that Suck." All was made in good humor, and Daichi was merely referring to that occurrence.

I put a warning. In the heat of a match like that, everyone was on edge and we can't scream in a game room. And, honestly, kids and adults swear a whole lot. Not much you can do to stop it.

Hey, when teams get the set (or earlier, if possible) I would love to hear feedback on the questions I wrote. If you don't want to wait to get the set, I wrote most of the myth, a little of the religion and philosophy, some of the visual arts, and some of the trash. Feel free to email me if you want to comment on something you think I wrote.
