Heh. Actually, I believe with an average above 65 (how much above being delightfully irrelevant) and high SAT scores, they had to legally accept me. How's that for a strong negotiating position?

BTW, Xiang Siow of Stuyvesant is going to UChicago. Seth Teitler, your services are no longer required.

I don't blame you for not starting a team if you're going to transfer so soon, but if you don't mind, and if UMinn. is actually reasonably close to the (a?) Normandale campus, could you maybe see if you could get some classmates interested in tagging along? Or maybe even a staff person from student activities? Maybe you could get them acquainted and they could start their own team.
It definitely is close enough to get people to come to practice (I might actually be living next to campus at the U as well), and if I end up deciding to stay the full year I may look in to getting a team started. That said, it does hang on if I'm not too burnt out for playing college QB.

Wofford usually gets a number of freshmen with hsqb experience. They have had teams compete sporadically over the years (they used to concentrate on CBI), but have never been a consistent presence. I don't see any reason why there shouldn't be a team at Wofford. Like Clemson and Furman, Wofford's in a good location to travel to many tournaments. If someone who happens to read this is going to Wofford and is interested in starting (or joining, if there's a team there already), feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I know a good person on the Wofford faculty who might be willing to help. I'm also happy to answer questions (probably badly) regarding the circuit.

Man. What the old spice donkey kong pen olive eye drop. Suddenly MIT doesn't think Palmer is smart enough for them? "No, I'm sorry, we have too many Blue MOPpers saturated here, try another university"

Blue MOP essentially means he is in the top 12-24 math kids in the nation... last year. He is tied for 12th or something this year.

College Admissions process = dumb.

Like I don't see how MIT can let in kids who don't have any real credentials, since they come from an under-represented state like Wyoming but a brilliant kid like Palmer gets shafted because the color of his skin and his geography (does anyone happen to know where TJ is located? =P).

Ridiculousness. FU AA.

But on that note, I'm going to Florida State.

I can tell you from two years here that this doesn't happen. Almost everyone at MIT is way qualified to be here, and even though there's some innate randomness in the process (how can you choose the top 1500 out of 3000 way qualified applicants?), I think there's very few mistakes of inclusion (i.e. very, very few people are here unjustifiably). I certainly agree that it seems weird that a MOPper wouldn't get in on the first go-round, but hey, weird things happen.

OK, I'm done looking like an admissions department lackey. Can't wait to see the frosh in the fall!

If he does end up going to Harvey Mudd, there's an active team with Mudd and maybe some other Claremont College people (don't know if it's just Mudd anymore, but Scripps and Pomona used to have teams that would occasionally join with them). They showed up to Aztlan Cup the past couple of years and look to be building into a decent team (I just don't know how eligibility would work for NAQT and ACF if the team does indeed draw from semi-autonomous colleges).

Claremont does have a team that includes all 5 Claremont Colleges, although the team is mostly made up of people from Claremont-McKenna and Mudd.
As for eligibility, we participated as Claremont at ACF Regionals last year and had no problems. I'm not sure about NAQT eligibility, however.

Hey, as a member of the quizbowl team, let me just say welcome to Cornell.

By the way, in the winter the school doesn't cancel even for like a foot of snow, so um... bring a jacket, but its totally worth it to see the dazzling frozen waterfall and 50 foot icicles hanging off the cliffside everyday in the winter.

Well, at least there's a better chance Carleton will show up to more real tournaments and not shy away from packet-writing next year.

About the only downside to "California winters" is Forest Fire Fall. There's nothing quite like a nice batch of Santa Anas blowing smoke at you at 35 miles an hour. El Nino seasons aren't too good either (especially with the landslide threats after Forest Fire Fall), but I'd imagine most people would gladly take this to get out of their miserably cold winter.
