I have a laptop and would be willing to moderate - thought I don't have wireless. I'd also play, but I'm absolutely horrid - if anyone wants a buzzer rock...

I'm in. I might be able to get Watson to also join. It'd be kind of cool if I could play with my old teammate Chris Kennedy but I don't what he has to say about this....

Hello,

Having recently established Internet Access in the Lobby (Thanks Evan S.) I was able to upload statistics. Thanks for listening to our questions, and generally being amicable at 1:00am. Special Thanks to Jonathan Magin and all his very hard work on this tournament.

Thanks to everyone who put this tournament together. It was a lot of fun (especially the draft, confusing and disjointed as it was). The experience was well worth my drive to Chicago.

Note about the stats, for accuracy: in addition to the top three teams, team "mike and ike" and my team were in the top playoff bracket - so my team was fourth overall and mike's was fifth. The other teams fall in as the stats indicate.

This tournament was the best part of my Chicago experience. I feel like I re-discovered the joy of getting tossups, which NAQT tends to take away. It was definitely worth getting scolded by my coach/almost getting suspended from the playoffs for not coming back until 1.

Thanks to all the teams who played the tournament; I'm glad people seemed to enjoy it, and writing it was really fun. I'd like to thank Gautam Kandlikar, Charles Meigs, Ahmad Ragab, Dennis Jang, Mike Bentley, Shantanu Jha, Eric Mukherjee, Katy Peters, Greg Peterson, and Trygve Meade for helping write and edit the questions. The questions should be posted online by tomorrow night; if they haven't been posted by Tuesday, then email me for a copy of a questions. Also, I'd like to thank all the people who helped moderate and staff.

Yeah, when taking into account that everything ran so late, that I had the rather sudden surprise of having to select a team from lots of people I didn't know, and that we didn't do that well, the fact that I was still basically having fun at the end says a lot for this. I mean, I could quibble about a couple things (and may later)...but seriously, there was a tossup on Victory Over the Sun. So, thanks to everyone for working on this.

By the way, it looks like you gave all our team's points to Daichi in our match against Team Lafer; I know that I got a 20 and a 15 that match. Normally, I wouldn't even mention something stupid like that, but considering how hard it was getting anything at this tournament, I want to treasure every good buzz I made for all posterity.

I've got to say that playing ridiculously hard quizbowl questions at 1 AM has long been a fantasy of mine. This weekend, my fantasy finally became a reality! Seriously, though, it was a really welcome break from stock clues and the same old questions again and again, with stuff that no one is supposed to have heard of (except my team's captain, the venerable Andrew Yaphe). Of course it was a bit of an ego boost for each question that I superpowered, powered, or even 10'ed. Awe-inspiring fails to describe Andrew Yaphe's knowledge of random literary works (The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction...whaa?). The questions were amazing, the tournament and the experience equally so. Congrats to Jonathan Magin et al. on a job well done!

Sorry to be a little out of the loop, but could someone do a post (or email me at prcastagna at hotmail dot com) that explains the experimental intricacies of this tourney? Were there changes other than the 20-15-10 structure of tossups and the "Khon Hoc" drafting of teams?

Thanks,

The only other differences I can think of were the allowal of tied matches and the fact that we played every single question in the packets, meaning for the last 7 or so games we played on 21 tossup games.

By "experimental," this tournament presumably means that it stole every idea from my tournament...stole, I say! Which is good, cause I think this sort of structure works really well for these insanely hard events. There's no negs either, obviously, which makes a lot of sense - no reason to sit and wait till the end of the question if your choice is between "answer X" and "other stuff that I don't know."

My estimable teammate Guy Tabachnick was credited with my superpower in our game against Jeff Hoppes's team.

EDIT: Also, my other estimable teammate Steven Canning was credited with all of my tossups in round 10 (against Ted Gioia's team). I went 0/1/3, he went 0/0/1.

The stats for me and our resident Bryce Avery Enterprise expert Matt Chadbourne were flipped in Round 7 (aka the second time we played Rob Carson's team).

It took me entirely too long to figure this out, possibly because we were playing quizbowl until 1 in the morning.

But, seriously, what the others said: this tournament was loaded with awesome stuff. That list of Eastern European national epics I made after the Lacplesis came up at ACF nationals a few years back finally came in handy.

No. But there is a BOOTCAMP. Best of luck during the mandatory rectal probe examination.
