It's too bad we can't group twitter into the forums... or can we?

More specifics on this: Give it a 60 minute window before posting. If one person is posting during a game, another person could be reading the post in the next room over, and that's not good for anybody.

As always, people playing at HSNCT mirrors occurring later are on their honor to avoid threads with HSNCT in the title as well as NAQT's podcasts and so forth.

I just want to say the Ohio-bred reader who is coming and *accidentally* had a swiss army knife still in his possession at the Cleveland Hopkins security gate will remain nameless. But if you happen to see Ben (last name left off), please ridicule him extensively.

Anyways, looking forward to seeing you all, about to head down to check in.

NKC is collected in MCI airport waiting for our flight, so we're imagining we'll get to HSNCT by like 9 pm. I'm wearing a Big lebowski t-shirt designed like Time man of the year, Tyler is wearing a blue hat and a tye-dye purple and gold t-shirt, Brandon is wearing last year's HSNCT shirt, and Grant is wearing a blue striped polo. Tomorrow's attire is unknown.

Green t-shirt and a Maggie Walker hoodie. Basically, if you see Gov, I'm the girl. I've got no idea what the guys are wearing...I'm assuming Cameron will be in a black t-shirt and jeans. As for the A Team, Palmer will either have his Maggie Walker sweatshirt or his complicated math/physics joke hoodie (begins with "and God said" ends with "And there was light" but I don't understand the stuff in the middle at all...the rest of the guys are pretty variable.

Wi-fi is free if you sign up for the Wyndham ByRequest program, which is also free. However, it seems like the create-an-account page goes down really often, and you have to "be" over 21. I also couldn't log in to the wireless network while in Firefox for some reason, but it did work in Explorer.

Garfield Hts. is 2-2, we beat East Brunswick NJ in R1 by something like 305-240, then got slapped around by Rockford Auburn and Minnetonka before pulling one out against Rancho Santa Fe that we should have lost after power-negging the first 5 questions in a row. This lack of sleep (prom last night) crap is killing them... Hopefully everyone else is doing better than we are. Good luck after lunch.

After our stellar 1-2 start, we finished the day 5-2 to get to 6-4 and make the playoffs, albeit with 1 loss to start. I'm not sure what is going on elsewhere yet, as we just finished and I'm preparing to get dinner and head down to Jonathan's tournament.

Eden Prairie qualified 2 for the playoffs -- A came in at 7-3, a surprising loss to a good Norcross team, a loss to TJ A (I think they had 11 powers) and then a close loss to DCC.
B came in at 6-4... won three close matches after starting 3-4 to make it in. 2 of the first three losses were in overtime. Tough day for B with the tense matches but they are in.
C came in at a respectable 4-6.

At last check, Wayzata and Chaska were both 5-2, I believe De La Salle was 4-3 and I think I heard Minnetonka was doing well... so looks like it could be a decent day for some MN teams.

East Lansing went 9-1, with its only loss to Whitman, who they later beat. I believe Whitman is also 9-1, but I'm not sure.

Edit: yeah, wrong about Whitman. Sorry. They were 8-2.

It's nice to see that nobody went winless!

EDIT:

Someone might want to check the accuracy of these standings and/or the scoreboard. It says Charter A is 7-3 in the standings but if you look at each individual game they've played on the scoreboard, they're 8-2...

Any other discrepancies?

Ransom Everglades-Suprise becasuse while in Florida they played a significantly weaker schedule and easier teams but still stood up agianst elite caliber teams

Thanks for all the late work getting this info out.

Here's a little stat work from an idle brain... hopefully all these teams and states are matched correctly.

68 total "6-4 or better" teams by state (best from state):

California 7 (Santa Monica #2)
Virginia 6 (TJ #5)
Ohio 6 (Ottawa Hills #36)
Minnesota 5 (Eden Prairie #13)

Pennsylvania 4 (State College #17)
Texas 3 (LASA Austin LBJ #9)
Illinois 3 (New Trier #20)
Alabama 3 (Brindlee Mtn. #28)
Florida 3 (Ransom Everglades #34)
North Carolina 2 (Dorman #1)
Missouri 2 (NKC #4)
Maryland 2 (Whitman #6)
Delaware 2 (Charter Wilm. #12)
Georgia 2 (Walton #18)
D.C. 2 (Gonzaga #19)
New Jersey 2 (Bergen County #22)
Kentucky 2 (Russell #29)
Connecticut 1 (E.O. Smith #51)

Agreed. But, we were not playing terribly. Statistically we were up there - around 13th in P/20TU, and around 9th in bonus convergence. But, we couldn't seem to win the close matches, of which we had several. So, yeah, I guess you could say we lost the vibe at times, especially when games were on the line.

One thing is going as expected: This tournament is as wide open as we thought it would be. Though some favorites are emerging, it will be an iteresting day, sorting it all out. There are a lot of teams here capable of beating each other on a given game.

Thanks for the note, Matt.

On a related note: everyone should re-check the standings, as some notable changes have occurred (i.e. North Kansas City changed from 9-1 to 8-2, Wilmington Charter now 8-2 rather than 7-3, so on).

I'd also like to note that every team from our top 25 made the playoffs, which is kind of cool (though not terribly unexpected for the obvious reasons).

So do only the top 64 continue? Or is it the top 64 and ties (like PGA golf cuts)? Or... what? Just curious what the next pairings are.

According to reports, it will be top 64 and ties... all teams above 50% winning percentage. However, they will disadvantage all 6-4 teams by having them be burdened with one additional loss, going into double-elimination finals.

See, I'm not quite buying into the whole "we need to assign a loss to all 6-4 teams". Last year at the NCT there were 61 teams that qualified for the playoffs. This year there are 68, meaning just 7 more playoff teams with just 16 more teams overall. I don't see how this meager increase would cause the need for something of an arbitrary penalty.

Of course, there's always the possibility that some sort of issues arose last year, but I can't recall any being mentioned on this forum.

Edit: Also, was this change announced anywhere? The first I heard of it was just a bit upthread.

I saw it in the Illinois comparisons thread. There is a reason as the PACE NSC elder that I am very wary of the effects of expanding the NSC field without thinking about effects on the playoff structure.

Lunchtime at playoffs:
TJ won out the winner's bracket. Six teams with one loss remain: Dorman A (I'm pretty sure), Dorman B, Whitman, and some others I haven't determined yet, but may include Eden Prairie, East Lansing, or Santa Monica

In round 7, the one-loss teams will play one another so three remain. The last four teams, including TJ, will be ranked and TJ will play the 4th team and the middle two will play. I'm pretty sure that TJ will be able to be locked out in this semifinal, but they will retain their advantage in the final if they win.

EP got 7th after we lost by about 50 to EL after Kurtis went on like a 5 power tear. It was insanely disheartening.

Of the games from today, three were variable on the last couple questions. Silby scorekept for our match against Santa Monica and can attest to the fact that we won on the second part of the packet's last bonus. We also beat Torrey Pines by 10 (should've been 20 but a protest was unnecessary). We got decently owned in the podcast against Whitman and won with enough room against Bergen and Russell.

The packets have been kind of weird, namely the "name this dude who shares his name with this other dude" questions that pop up everywhere as an excuse for NAQT to make too hard questions more accessible. That said, we luckily didn't lose on a packet today; we lost because of teams.

When should we expect to see a Day 2 scoreboard posted on NAQT.com?
