I think you can triple major if you come in with enough credits.
I'm going for a Double major in Biology and Comp. Lit. and perhaps a minor in either Religion or Medieval Studies.

Yes, if you pick majors that have good prerequisite overlap and take lots of classes. You can double major in wildly different things pretty much anywhere, but to triple major you'd need a lot of courses that can overlap multiple majors.

I don't think the triple major presented (history/astronomy/IR) can work unless a lot of history courses can get credit toward the IR major, and even then, it's not going to be easy to pull off the units.

Essentially, people can double major in widely disparate things because people can spend two years in college and not have the faintest idea what they're doing, so they can have a lot of courses that don't actually get them closer to a degree. This forces colleges to set a high or nonexistent unit cap so that these people can actually graduate and people have some room for interest courses. For instance, at UCLA, you could graduate with anywhere between 180 and 216 units. Despite this, some majors only required 135-150 units worth of classes (GE + prereqs + major courses), leaving plenty of room for a second, completely unrelated major if you worked things the right way. To triple major without a lot of course overlap, you're looking at petitioning for more units and taking 20+ units a quarter, which is just not feasible if 8 or more of those units are science. I don't know, maybe it's easier for people on the semester system, but that also means far fewer classes to pick in the first place.

Also, Ian - as mathematics is one of those majors that requires only about 150 units to finish, I highly recommend you either add a second major or completely unrelated minor. I've heard some bad things about the undergraduate part of the department, and experienced a few of them firsthand (as a math minor myself). Adding that second major would give you flexibility in case you end up disillusioned with the department and give you a way to feel like you're learning "quizbowl stuff" in class.

I know math is one of my majors, but I am also adding something between Chemistry, Physics, or maybe both. Depending on what I get on the AP exam, maybe a Spanish minor. I'm also hoping to do the 4-year masters in Math. Thank goodness for AP credit. :yay:

I've got a while before I head off to college, but I was wondering if anyone knew how difficult it would be for me to get certified to teach both history and math. I don't particularly want to choose between the two, and I think being able to teach either/both would increase my odds of getting a job somewhere I'd actually like to work. I've been trying to figure out how to go about that, though. Is it possible to do a double minor? If it is, I'd most likely major in education and then do a double minor in history/math.

It would probably be pretty tough, but it likely can be done. I'd be more interested in what level of teaching you'd do history & math. Granted, I think it would make you a bit more employable, but it could also drive you a bit crazy. Will the teachers in the forum provide input?

I'd prefer to teach gifted high school students, and algebra and world history are my favorite subsets of math and history. Also, while I haven't had calculus yet, I keep asking my current math teacher how to do things and at least three or four times he's said, "Don't worry about that; that's calculus," so I think I'll probably enjoy calc as well.

Well, minoring and majoring practices differ from school to school. At UVA, you aren't allowed to do a double minor, but you can major as many times as you like, theoretically. Shekar Sidarth (TJ '03, UVA '07) triple-majored in Spanish, Comp Sci, and History, IIRC. One of them might have been a minor....

Since my calc teacher will also be my coach (Dr. Barnes), the constant reminders to do my homework will probably not be awesome. At least I won't have trouble tracking him down to ask a question...

I know that Bob Powers at Cave Spring is certified in both Math and History. He student taught at Auburn under our Debate Coach/US History teacher. If you end up certified in both, you will likely be forced to teach math since there are less math teachers out there than there are history teachers. At many of the traditional public shools, the history spots are reserved for athletic coaches. Of course, you wouldn't have to teach at a traditional public school.

Ignore Evan. Calculus is a pain in the butt, and won't get you anywhere in life. Unfortunately, it is a necessity to get into the harder (and more fun math), so you might as well get it over with in high school instead of having to take it in college. (Actually, I took Calc twice... but the second time was infinitely harder, because it was proof-based).

Oh, and I'm a Math and Political Science Major.
And the Math degree is the BA variety instead of the BS type. Because of this and the double major, I get zero electives. This with max AP credit applied.

Depends on your major. I had the option to take multivariable calc, and regretted doing so a year later when taking Intermediate Microeconomics.

If you can't tell by my sig, I'm an Accountancy major going for two degrees in two years (Bachelor's in 4, Master's the following).

Re: Majors

Post by Skepticism and Animal Feed »

Whether or not you can triple major is such a school-specific question that it makes little sense to ask it generally. It depends on a lot of things like how much AP credit is granted, whether or not there is a required core, whether there are quarters or semesters, etc.

For instance, despite it being easy at some schools to triple major, isn't it virtually impossible to merely double major at Princeton?

I've got a friend double majoring with a minor at Princeton... Physics and Chem as majors with a Spanish minor. She also happened to have over 10 AP courses so she got out of introductory level classes (even with no credit), so her schedule was much more free to take courses for those majors.
