Experimental tournament during HSNCT

Post by magin »

Gautam Kandlikar and I are writing an experimental (probably doubles) tournament to be held sometime during the weekend of the HSNCT. It will be tossup only, with powers and superpowers, with target difficulty easier than Westbrook's event but harder than ACF Nationals 2007. The tournament will be free, and open to everyone, and be at least ten rounds, hopefully more. Also, since a bunch of high schoolers will be around, I'd be fine allowing them to play on teams of 4. Also, there will be no negs.

I'd like to gauge the interest in such a tournament, and field any questions about logistics or the tournament itself. If anyone wants to help Gautam and me out writing the tournament, email me at jmagin AT umd DOT edu.

I have a plane ticket, so I'll be there. I'll also keep suggesting that you run it Friday night, but it seemed like most people initially preferred Saturday night.

I'm interested in playing, and as such I'd like to know whether Sunday night is a night that it might happen so I can book my plane tickets.

It would have to start pretty late on Friday night, wouldn't it? The HSNCT website lists the practice rounds going until 10 PM. I wouldn't be so crazy about starting a 10+ round tournament after 10 PM, especially having to get up early the next day.

Well, would this tournament havve teams that you just choose beforehand, or would there be a draft like Westbrook did?

I was going to ask whether this would be a great idea, considering that you are supposed to be there on someone else's dime to help them run a tournament... theirs. Logistically how are you going to do this (unless the NAQT folks wants to do it)? Just wondering.

Everyone posting above has rationally assumed that this will take place Friday or Saturday evening after the conclusion of NAQT's rounds. There was abundant pickup ACF played at last year's HSNCT, and NAQT was happy to provide rooms and buzzers (which would otherwise be sitting unused).

Yeah, I'd be shocked if anyone complained if we just found some of the hotel rooms that have buzzers and played there after the rounds are done since nobody's using them and they have stuff set up. If nothing else is workable, I'd imagine enough people could run it out of their personal hotel rooms if they want to volunteer that space.

Assuming I'm going, I'll be staffing. There are a ton of people at the event, not all of them interested in playing, so I'm sure we should be able to find some people to help out.

If I go to staff HSNCT (fairly likely), I would be happy to play or staff at this tournament. It looks interesting, for sure.

As a side note, how are moderator hotel rooms worked out for the main tournament? Assuming I go, should I be looking for someone to room with?

I think NAQT assigns you a room unless you request people to stay with.

Yes, I'm pretty sure Jonathan said he was getting or got R.'s permission to hold this tournament in rooms being used for the HSNCT (obviously while that tournament is not going on).

Since I suck almost as bad as Steven, I'm definitely down for this and since I haven't seen Chris Ray requesting a teammate, I'm going to request to be Steven's teammate, unless of course you choose to do a draft or if Steven flat-out refuses to play on my team, in which case he can find his own damn room.
Also, there will be no negs.
Yeah, then I'm definitely in... let us know when you figure out the logistics and schedule. We're flying in on Friday morning and out on Monday evening, so whenever you want to have it I'm down to play.
