Wallace Stevens Literature Singles at GMU (3/14/08)

Post by Magister Ludi »

This is the formal announcement for the First Annual Wallace Stevens Literature Singles Tournament: Chris Ray- The Emperor of Ice Cream. It will be played on March 14th the Friday before the DACQ Weekend of Quizbowl. Tentatively it will take place at GMU.

The tournament will consist of ten packets of twenty tossups and no bonuses with powers. The distribution will be 30% American, 20% World, 25% European, and 25% British. The difficulty will be similar to ACF Fall. Eric Mukherjee from Brown and I will be writing/editing the tournament.

There is a very special literary prize for first place. The price for registration is $10. If you would like to register email me at tedgioia[at]starpower[dot]net, email Eric at Eric_Mukherjee[at]brown[dot]edu, or post in this thread. We need about 5 buzzer systems, if you can help provide any that would be much appreciated.

If you have any questions please contact me or post in this thread. Further details will be posted as the date draws closer.

I'll play. Some other people from GDS might also play, but I'll have to check at practice. I can probably bring a buzzer, as well.

I'd also like to know when you all intend to start. I do have (16) rooms reserved starting at 8am on Friday. :) Just as importantly, when you all plan to end the Friday shindig...

The limiting factors are buzzers and readers of course. And when people intend to drop by campus.

Mason Alert system

Post by First Chairman »

Recent incidents on college campuses have resulted in the creation of multiple alert systems to notify students about any emergency situations. (As I type this, the entire DC area goes on weather alert.)

To allay any fears that could come up with students, parents, or faculty, I encourage all attendees for the weekend of quiz bowl events in March or May/June to register with the Mason Alerts system: https://alert.gmu.edu/register.php . Please elect to receive notifications in the "Campus Visitor" group.

Not that I'm on the list or anything, but Mohit signed me (Bali Gupta) to participate in the Lit singles tournament. I'd prefer not to at this point. Hopefully, that won't be a problem for you (and it shouldn't considering my name wasn't on the list to begin with)

So does the 5:00 PM starting time listed on the Facebook event mean that the Lit singles start at 5:00? I haven't seen many details for this anywhere. If they are somewhere I haven't seen, a link would be nice.

Thanks.

Seconded. We haven't decided when we're leaving school yet, so a start time would definitely be helpful.

There are 23 people registered for the event right now. The cap is 28. If you haven't registered, but would like to play please contact be ASAP (I'm looking at you RM).

The event will be held in the A wing of the Robinson Building on the GMU campus. There will be signs on the doors of Robinson that will specify the meeting room. The start time will either be 6 pm or 7 pm. The event is starting late to accommodate people who are playing the event who are traveling Friday afternoon.

Parking for 3/14: I'd suggest parking in the Mason Pond parking lot, which is located right next to the Johnson Center student center and Robinson Hall. If you're bringing a large bus or van, please contact me. I think you can park "remotely" in the lots that service the Patriot Center, assuming there isn't something going on that night.

Posted info in the DACQ Saturday thread on parking... though I'm guessing remote lot parking would be okay.

Also, Garfield is registering another kid for the this, Rexy Dorado. Although I will say that, if this fills up, and you some upper level players who there isn't room for, he can be bumped out.

I'll make it a bit easier... there's a courtyard outside Robinson A where there is a standing clock tower. It's not a big clock tower, but there is a plaza there... it may be a good idea to convene at that plaza right outside the doors of Robinson A. It's "up the hill" from the George Mason statue, which is next to the Mason Pond parking structure.

From memory:
1. Daichi Ueda, WJ
2. Shantanu Jha, Whitman
3. Nick Clusserath, Dorman
4. Todd Faulkenberry, Dorman

I don't have the results of the 5-8th place game, but players involved included Dallas Simons of MLK and Dan Puma of Gonzaga.

Full Results:

We played four prelim rounds in roughly the Carleton Singles format - four rooms of six, with the top three moving up and the bottom three moving down. We used these results to seed for playoffs.

The playoffs featured sixteen players in quadrant groups (seed 1/7/8/6, etc.), after which we played out a weird combination of games (Ted will explain) for 1-8 place. The finals saw the top four play forty questions (same for 5-8). Both rounds were extremely competitive. Here are the final standings:

1. Daich Ueda, Walter Johnson (135 pts in the final)
2. Shantanu Jha, Whitman (125)
3. Nick Clusserath, Dorman (90)
4. Todd Faulkenberry, Dorman (75)
_____
5. Dallas Simons, MLK Magnet (80)
6. Dan Puma, Gonzaga (75)
7. Doug Yeatman, Stuyvesant (60)
8. Nina Charap, Stuyvesant (20)
____
Other playoff players, by order of prelim seed:
Matt Malenky, Chattahoochee
Guy Tabachnik, Hunter
Keshav Pillai, TJ
Nathan Jose, LOT Academy
Rexy Dorado, Garfield?
Mohit Iyyer, TJ
Sarah Angelo, Governor's School
Ian Eppler, GDS

Thanks to all players for participating - you guys were truly phenomenal. Thanks to Ted and everyone else (Eric Mukherjee, Andrew Hart, Jonathan Magin, Matt Weiner, and anyone else I missed).

Oh, about paying the entry fee of $10: Ted will be sitting next to me tomorrow at the sign-in table, so just pay him then.

Actually, the 5th-8th place was read with just 20 questions as we didn't have the last round's worth of questions... which is just as well so everyone was able to see the final four.

I hope everyone enjoyed the tournament, If you would like the set just email me, and I will send it to you. I'd like to thank Matt Weiner and Trygve Meade for writing free lance packets, and Jonathan Magin, Andrew Hart, and Rob Carson for last minute help with finishing the set. I'd love to hear any comments on the set, and to hear if people would be interested in me writing another set next year.

I enjoyed the set a lot. Not surprisingly, the questions were about the best one could ever get at the high school level. So, first of all, thank you to all the writers who contributed to the tournament. I would definitely like to see the lit subject tournament return at next year's WoQ.

You know, since it was an issue I felt was worth discussion, I'm hoping that "this part of the post" magically pops up back again once the mirror is done . . . or right now, given Andrew's explicit permission.
