Frequency lists

Post by BGSO »

I'm going to try to convince my coach to purchase frequencey lists, I currently only know of two (NAQT, and carleton) my first question is can you even get carleton lists anymore. And second if you can would you suggest buying the NAQT or carleton list.

I am overwhelmingly driven to concur. If you feel the need to buy study guides, we have some nice ones that go into actual detail that exceeds title-author stuff. That stuff will never set a team apart from anyone else.

Also, don't by frequency lists. Ever. The ones available for free - findable in various forms online - are much better anyway.

Don't ask me why these words reminded me that NAQT has freebies too, and not, you know, the explicit mentioning of NAQT in the first post.

Well the plan is over the summer, to use the carleton lit database to study (along with ace stuff) its the art and music, that I feel are lacking in pure volume of titles that come up.

I guess my question really is...once you coaches have all the cannon Fine arts stuff covered where do you send your FA person? I'm gonna guess lesser known works of the cannon artists/composers, but am I right. Or headed in the wrong direction?

The way to become a good (visual) art player is to look at lots and lots paintings, not lists of paintings. Just find one of those Phaidon books (The Art Book, The American Art Book, The 20th Century Art Book) and go through it. Then find books about other artists and flip through those. Then go hang out in art museums.

Our team took the NAQT Art frequency list and found a image for each of them off the Artchive (except for some of the more obscure works). Then, we looked at some random ones each day and learned them.

To almost mimic alex, I used to get the list of works and try to write 3 lines about them just to describe them. For questions about art pieces usually what they ask is what you see, but from less detailed to the obvious.

ex, the woman in the back are crying... FTP, name this David work about three Roman brothers.

ex, On the back is a representation of the world... name this triptych by Bosch.

Other than that, they usually ask about the context or history.

ex, helped arouse support for the Greek Revolution.

ex, On the back, a curator wrote, "Au Revoir"

Edit: replaced Bon Voyage with Au Revoir.

For art, I went through the NAQT list and looked up the Wikipedia Article for each work and read it. Other people usually point out something that you miss on your first view of the painting.

ACE had a really good composers list...there used to be a preview on their website but it's gone now...
A quick glance at the NAQT You Gotta Know list makes me suggest that you learn not only the works they have listed but also their composers. It doesn't have everyone who comes up, but it's a good place to start.

The best way to get good at music is read overviews of composer biographies, listen to a lot of classical music, and then least importantly study music theory and get a music education.

This could be pretty helpful, but I do think it would be much more helpful to look at the picture without, you know, thinking about it. Let me do it right now with The Third of May . . .

OK, so there's the big guy in yellow. He's obviously the focus of the picture, because he's the only one wearing light clothes and he looks like a Jesus figure. And he's kneeling in a pool of blood, that captures your attention after the Jesus figure. Then there's the unnatural light pointing at their feet, that throws the viewer off for a while, that's pretty cool. I guess he's bringing people over from the Jesus to the killing machines: the mechanical French soldiers in shakoes. You can't see their faces or anything, and that makes them seem ruthless. Oh hey, there's a big castle lurking in the darkness. You almost don't notice that, but it's a profound counterpoint to the enlightened guy in the center. That brings home the pathos, because they can't even deign to execute them in the city they're defending: they have to do it in a sequestered corner, with the city looming. etc.

All I'm saying is, this seems way more helpful (and fulfilling in a non-QB sense) than just writing a short tossup about the features in and of themselves. It doesn't take very long, either, and you're left with the image in your head.

I am not saying write a question. In fact, you just did what I proposed and apparently it works. I guess the confusion came from "lines"; by lines i meant sentences.

My bad. Pardon my french.
Athena Starwoman wrote:The best way to get good at music is read overviews of composer biographies, listen to a lot of classical music, and then least importantly study music theory and get a music education.
Agreed. Music is a lot like art in that there are questions about the piece that deal with its context
ex, ... name this symphony originallly written for Napoleon ( Beethoven's Eroica Symphony).

But other clues can deal with the composition of the work itself. Such as the instruments, chords, certain movements etc. That might require a background in music history or one could go through questions and note down these idiosyncrasies of pieces.

I am NOT proposing just studying music and not listening to it. I am merely saying that might be a hint for people who don't know any music theory. I like Vivaldi's Winter, but would not actually get a question on it's composition.

The first time viewer would get French soldiers, the castle's effect of pathos, and the thoughts of the soldiers without thinking of it?

I guess that's a bit of 9th grade art lurking there, but oh well, the best I could come up with on short notice. Maybe another time I'll do it for something I've actually never seen before, haha.

Here's something I've always wondered: has anyone ever gotten a music question about a work based on information about chord changes and movements and all that technical stuff? Or to rephrase that, have any of you ever?

Ive buzzed in all the time on "the flute beginning" (something like that ) clue for Bolero and it has usually been right. Its not the best idea, but it seems to be a recurring theme.

I'm not familiar with ACE selling their stuff - it has been available for free on their website in the past and I see nothing readily apparent on the website indicating that they're making them available. If you have any reason for your opinion, please feel free to share.

Actually, from viewing your posts, it seems you are somewhat unfamiliar with the rule that you need to post substantive things. Posting things like "random person is a beast" and "buy them" - particularly when this seems to be incorrect advice - is not such a great idea. Please stop doing this as it sort of breaks board rules.

I believe you can buy some from those that have been to ACE Camp (though you might be breaking the law...I'm not sure). I think they give them out at camp. I'm sure someone on this board can email them to you if you're able to email them something of equal Quiz Bowl value.
