RESULTS: Spring Classic @ Maryland - 4/12/08

Post by Mike Bentley »

This post contains the most up to date information, as of 3/4/2008:

The Maryland Academic Quiz Team is pleased to announce the latest incarnation of the Spring Classic High School Tournament, which will take place on Saturday, April 12th, 2008. This is an NAQT-style tournament using house written questions, meaning there will be 20 tossups and accompanying bonuses. There will probably be powers at this tournament.

We plan to offer teams 5 or 6 guaranteed rounds before lunch. After lunch we will be placing teams into a single elimination playoff bracket, probably of the top 16 teams. Teams that don't make the playoffs or that get eliminated from the playoffs are welcome to play scrimmage matches against other teams.

PRICING:

First Team: $55
Second Team: $45
Third+ Team: $35
Buzzer Discount: -$5
Moderator Discount: -$10
Travel Discount (150+ Miles): -$10
Minimum per team: $30

The questions will be distributed freely to all teams in electronic form. Limited paper copies will also be available on a first come, first serve basis.

REGISTRATION:

To register, please contact Mike Bentley at [email protected]. We currently are capping the field at 32 teams, although if we end up getting more interest and more moderators, we will probably be willing to expand the field.

PHYSICAL REGISTRATION:

UPDATE 3/6/08:
Registration is currently scheduled to take place from 12:00-12:30 PM in Jimenez Hall. This page will be updated with more information regarding the location of the tournament.

Hope to see you in April,
Mike Bentley

The date for this tournament has changed to Saturday, 4/12. Please disregard Chris's post, as that information is no longer accurate.

Hrmm, ok. If any other schools have tapings, let me know.

It's possible that we could change the date to Sunday, 4/13 but I don't think it's that likely unless a lot of schools aren't able to make it because of tapings. If the tapings are in the morning, perhaps one idea is that we can start the tournament around noon or so if enough teams taping It's Ac would be willing to come to the tournament after the taping.

As always, the taping schedule is online:

Granted, I'm woefully behind on who won which matches, but I have them all on Tivo, so I'll catch up...eventually.

Thanks. That is a lot of tapings. I'll see what scheduling has to say about changing the tournament to Sunday.

Unforunately scheduling is unable to make any additional changes on our reservations. I apologize to any teams that will not be able to come to this tournament because of It's Academic tapings.

If any teams that have early tapings on Saturday would still like to come to the tournament, please let me know when you think your tapings will be finished. I would probably be willing to move the start time back until as late as 12 to accomodate some of these teams.

Apparently, we're the first taping, so yes, later start time would be much appreciated.

Ok, the current plan is to start registration at noon. If there is enough interest, we will start another bracket even later in the day so that teams with later tapings can still attend.

The tournament is less than a month away, so it would be great if teams that were at least interested in coming send me an e-mail ([email protected]) letting me know how many teams they might bring. This will help us get a greater grasp of the staff we will need for the tournament.

The tournament is less than a week away, but we still have lots of room for teams that want to attend. We will be keeping registration open until at least Thursday night for late minute teams.

What are people's preferences for the playoffs? We're not going to have too many more than 16 teams, so a 16 team single elimination bracket like we usually do might not make all that much sense.

Here are the five options I've come up with:
1. Single elimination 16 team bracket. 4 playoff games.

2. Single elimination 8 team bracket. 3 playoff games.

3. Single elimination 8 team bracket with best of 3 finals. 4-5 playoff games.

4. Top 6 team round robin, final if teams are tied. 5-6 playoff games.

5. Double elimination 8 team bracket. 6-7 playoff games (unless I'm doing double elimination bracket wrong).

Keep in mind that this tournament is starting later than usual (noon), so end time will be a concern. We also only have 12 packets, so it may not be possible to do option 5 if we have to run 6 prelims (we plan to do either 5 or 6 prelims). I'm probably inclined to do either Option 3 or 1.

Option 4, in a heartbeat. If not, option 2 with more prelim rounds.

I'd also rather use option 4, unless time will be a major concern. Will this be run on the clock like the HSNCT?

Alright, it looks like it will be a round robin unless things are running really late and I start to get notions from teams that they don't want to stay for that (although I don't expect this to happen).

Here is the update on the tournament if anyone didn't get it by e-mail:

---

Quizbowl Coaches/Advisors:

The Maryland Spring Classic High School tournament will be taking place this Saturday, April 12th. REMEMBER, registration for this tournament will be taking place at the relatively late time of between 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM. Please try to be on time, we would like to get things running as soon as possible.

We will be registering teams in the big lecture hall in the basement of Jimenez Hall (there will be signs posted). THIS IS A DIFFERENT BUILDING THAN USUAL FOR OUR HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENTS. To park, you should enter campus via the main entrance on Campus Drive from Route 1. Go straight through the “M” traffic circle and go up the hill. Stay right as the road forks past the Student Union and you will come to a large parking lot. You will want to park in Lot 1 or Lot 7 or any other lot that says you are free to park on the weekend. Jimenez will be back on Campus drive, across from the Student Union. Please consult the online map of campus at: http://www.parking.umd.edu/themap/

We will be running either 5 or 6 preliminary matches depending on what the final field count is. Because our field is a little smaller than usual, we're going to do a 6 team round robin playoffs unless things are running very late in which case we will just do a 8 team single elimination bracket. Teams that do not make the playoffs will be welcome to play exhibition matches against each other.

If anything changes at the last minute on Saturday morning, you can call me. Please e-mail me to get my phone number. However, cell reception is notoriously terrible in Jimenez so it is possible that I won't receive your call. I will make an effort to go outside and check my messages, so if you get my voicemail you should leave a message.

Finally, here is the current field that I have. If the number of your teams is not accurate, please let me know immediately:

Updated 4/10/08:
Hammond: 2
Gonzaga: 1
ER: 1
Woodrow Wilson: 1
WJ: 1
Oxon Hill: 1
Severna Park: 1-2
Centennial: 3
Pikesville: 1
Whitman: 1
Charter: 1
Glenelg: 1
Paint Branch: 1
Flowers: 1
"Feldman Academy": 1

There is also likely one additional team that will be signing up.

See everyone on Saturday,
Mike Bentley

Just a quick question - will the questions be given out at the end of all the mirrors, or should I prepare to furiously write down all the bonus parts I miss?

Also, Whitman I hear will be playing without three of its starters for the prelims; WJ will be playing with three men, although that makes less of a difference. You may or may not want to factor that into the prelim bracket...

Yeah, we will be giving out a limited number of paper copies and we'll be sending out the questions once the mirrors finish.

And yes, I'm aware of some of the teams being short handed. I tried to factor that into creating brackets, hopefully they ended up being balanced.

After the prelims, the top 8 teams went into a single-elimination playoff, and the winner of each match went on for a final round robin. In that round robin, Whitman (3) went 3-0, Charter (1) 2-1, WJ (4) 1-2, and Gonzaga (2) 0-3. Shantanu, naturally, won the indiv award.
I'd like to commend the Maryland team for once again running a tournament efficiently, although I wish we started the playoffs earlier instead of watching Futurama. The questions were quite good, although not without problems (which I will discuss in the specific thread).
I had a lot of fun, so thanks to the writers of the set and the officials of the tournament.

I hope Feldman was able to play some scrimmage games, since he decided to stay for them despite not making the playoffs.

Yeah, sorry for the delay between prelims and playoffs. The rounds got out earlier than I thought they would, plus Papa John's decided that they would deliver our pizza an hour late, so we ended up taking about 30 minutes longer than we should have.

Ok, stats are now posted.

Prelims: http://www.studentorg.umd.edu/maqt/2008 ... dings.html
Playoffs: http://www.studentorg.umd.edu/maqt/2008 ... dings.html

I will be sending the questions out to teams once the Kansas State mirror of this tournament finishes next weekend.

Thanks to all the teams that showed up to our tournament, especially those that stuck around until 7:30 to finish up the playoffs. Look out for our Fall Tournament, which we currently plan to host on Saturday, September 27th (although this date may change, look for a formal announcement).

While this tournament did run long, I appreciated that it started at noon. I know such a late start time is not amenable to everyone, and is not reasonable beyond 10-12 rounds, but I hope to see more tournaments in the future that have a scheduled mid-day start.

Yeah I guess I'd like to see what people thought of having a tournament starting later than usual. I know that some coaches would have preferred an earlier start so that they'd have more time after the tournament to do stuff on Saturday, but it would be interesting to hear what other people thought.
