Scholar's Bowl @ Berry College Mount Berry, GA -- UPDATE!!!!

Post by BerryCollegeBowl »

The Berry College College Bowl team is very pleased to announce that our annual High School Scholar's Bowl tournament will take place on our beautiful campus on January 26, 2008. As in past years the tournament is open to teams throughout the state of Georgia. However, for the first time we would also like to welcome teams from the surrounding states (AL,TN,NC,SC,FL) to compete as well. Space is limited as we would like to keep the number of teams in the low 20s. This is a preliminary announcement, so other details (fees, etc.) will be announced within the coming days.

Now in our 37th year, Berry College has one of the longest running College Bowl programs in the country. We also have the luxury of being fully funded by our administration, and all of players receive partial scholarships.

If you have any questions, please feel free to to contact the team @ [email protected] or our Coach, Dr. Wade Carpenter @ [email protected].

UPDATE -- Scholar's Bowl @ Berry College 1/26/08

Post by BerryCollegeBowl »

As previously promised here is the fee schedule for the annual Berry College Scholar's Bowl to be held on January 26, 2008 on our lovely campus in Mount Berry (just north of Rome), GA.

Registration Fee -- $75

Discounts:

-$10 per additional team (down to fee of $55)
-$5 per buzzer system/ $10 max. discount (Note: We do request that each team bring at least one buzzer system, if possible. Fully functional is of course preferable, but we can work with partially functional systems as well.)
-$5 per experienced reader (We do not anticipate needing assistance here, but you never know. :-) )

The questions for this tournament will once again be written by the excellent team of Eric Emmett and Chris Silvers, both former Berry captains.

Please have your registration (# teams, player names, etc.) to us by no later than January 12, 2008. Entry is first come first serve. We do not have a set maximum number of teams, however we do want to keep the number in the low 20s (20-24 max). Please send all registration info and direct any and all questions to our coach, Dr. Wade Carpenter, @ [email protected]

Thank you for your time and we hope to see you there!!

I was told that we were confirmed for the tournament and could pay later. Now I don't see our name on the list. Our name is listed in earlier updates on this message board.

Please include us as definitely coming to the tournament.

Thanks,

We'll be running a round robin of two divisions with 12 teams each. Then we'll take the top two from each division and have playoffs. There will be a consolation round or two for those teams who don't make the playoffs.

The rounds are shorter than standard, 15 tossups and bonuses. The questions are pyramidal and would be on par with NAQT in level of difficulty. The questions are written by two very experienced writers, Chris Silvers and Eric Emmett. For those of you not familiar with their names, Eric and Chris wrote the Walton HS Fall tournament for several years.

Coaches,

The following is a message from Dr. Carpenter regarding the schedule for Saturday. We apologize for not getting this out sooner, but last minute details have left us swamped. Please note that we are now @ 22 teams due to Lovett withdrawing and Calhoun down to one team. We are still waiting to hear from our standby list to see who will fill those slots. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!!

We look forward to seeing you all. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. in the Krannert Center lobby. Come in the main entrance, go almost 3/4 through the roundabout around the flagpole, take that last exit before the roundabout is complete, then an almost immediate left, and go to the Krannert parking area in the back. Check in with me at the desk, and we'll direct you to the initial meeting. We hope to have the general meeting around 9 a.m., and start competitions as close to 9:15-9:30 as possible. We will have light refreshments (coffee and danishes, etc.). With 24 teams, we will be dividing into two flights, one to compete in Krannert, and one in the Math & Science Building across the lane. We will have 11 preliminary rounds, then 1 playoff round, then a finals round. The 1st playoff round will feature the number one team from Krannert versus the number two team from Science, and vice versa. Cross-flight matchings of the other teams will be calculated. Then we'll all gather in the Science Building auditorium (probably) for the final round. After that, if folks are interested, we'll have a fun round between all-stars versus Berry alumni readers. We anticipate lunch break somewhere around round 5, and will announce as circumstances warrant. Lunch is on your own. There are plenty of places nearby. We hope to be done somewhere around 5 p.m. We hope also that you'll have a chance to do a quick spin around our campus, and Berry people will be on hand to answer questions from interested students. If we can be of any further assistance, please let us know at [email protected]. If trouble occurs on the way, my cell phone is 706-506-3522.

Berry was a nicely run tournament. It was a bit long given the number of rounds, but fun nonetheless. I would however disagree with the questions being NAQT level in the difficulty. Most of the questions, in the prelims at least, bordered on JV level questions.

It was nicely run. The 30-20-10 bonuses were WAY too easy, though.

I got to witness one of the best matches I have ever seen - Brindlee Mountain B vs. Dorman A. I thought BMHS B would get slaughtered, but we were actually winning by 10 at the half-time score check. In the final six questions, Dorman went ahead by 40. Then BMHS tied it. Then Dorman went ahead by 40. Then Brindlee Mountain tied it. Etc. Etc.

Final score: Dorman A 290 Brindlee Mountain B 250.

Despite the loss, I was a proud, proud coach. My B team almost took out the #1 team in the country...

Brindlee Mountain A sucked hard.

They were proud, but also frustrated. They know that winning just one more of the many buzzer-races and we would've won. The impressive thing was that many of these buzzer-races came early in the tossups, where most teams wouldn't have a clue. Both teams were white hot.

No, I really meant his B-team. This A-team saga is mind-boggling.

You seem to have awarded "Andy K" from Cedar Shoals B an award instead of giving it to "Andy K" from Brindlee Mountain A like you were supposed to. I'm thinking that the folks at Cedar Shoals should have noticed when a person with 4 ppg got an award for individual scoring...

Lee,

We'll fix it. I noticed the problem this morning. The gang at Cedar Shoals has done nothing wrong here. We caused this, not them. We apologize for the mix up. It will be corrected.

Yeah... I didn't mean to dig at Cedar Shoals. In fact, I heard that they had already left and weren't even there for the awards, so there is no way they could have done anything about it. Sorry that post sounded like I was mad at Cedar Shoals. I'm not mad at anyone. It's actually sorta funny...
