RESULTS: NAQT Illinois State Championships @ UIUC

Post by Summoned Skull »

The University of Illinois Academic Buzzer Team is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 2008 NAQT Illinois State Championships! The tournament will take place on the lovely campus at Urbana/Champaign on Saturday, February 23.

The top 15% of teams will qualify for the 2008 HSNCT, as well as the highest placing team that has not already qualified at another event. The top four finishers, regardless of field size, will also qualify for PACE.

The base fee will be $60, and the following deductions may apply:
-$10 for teams new to NAQT format
-$5 for a WORKING set of buzzers, maximum of two

Interested coaches should contact me, James Sanner, at [email protected].

Well Brad, I'm not actually sure quite yet, but we most likely will. Laird has already graciously agreed to moderate as well. I'll let you know as soon as I do!

Field update so far (that is, firm commitments):
Loyola
Carbondale
Peoria Heights
EDIT: New Trier
EDIT: Rockford Auburn

I'm expecting an influx of replies/registrations as soon as school gets back into swing.

Thanks and Happy New Year,
James Sanner

Alright, the tentative final field (though I'll take more, if they'd like!) is:

Loyola
Carbondale
Peoria Heights
New Trier
Rockford Auburn
Blue Ridge HS
Petersburg PORTA
Rockford East
Moline

Emails with the location/time details will be dispatched in short order to the coaches. I will also post it here.

Thanks,
James

Hopefully all coaches have received this, but just in case:
Good afternoon, coaches!

Here are (hopefully) the final details about NAQT state!

Time:
The NAQT State Championship tournament will begin at approximately 9:00 AM on Saturday, February 23rd.

Location:
We will be in Gregory Hall, located on the main quad of the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign. I do not have precise room assignments yet, and will send out a supplemental email when I do. Directions will also be posted within the building on the morning of. Parking will be available in the adjacent library lot, which is labeled "E3".

Maps:
Gregory Hall Location: Here

Format:
As it stands right now, I'm planning on a full round robin (9 games) followed by a final if no team is two wins clear of field. This could still change, as I am trying to get you the most possible games while not running an exhaustingly long tournament.

Where can my team go to eat?
Gregory Hall is roughly two blocks from the Green Street, the main strip of restaurants around campus, which has a terrific selection.

Payment:
Payment will be accepted during registration on the morning of the tournament.
I'll draw up invoices for each team, but just for reference, here's the fee structure again:
The base fee is $60
-$10 for teams new to NAQT format
-$5 for a buzzer set, maximum of two

I think that covers everything. If you have any questions at all, or I foolishly left something out, feel free to drop me an email or call me at 217-358-2873 at your convenience.

Thanks a lot all,

NAQT is writing the questions. Every year, they write a set for use in state-championship level tournaments. As I understand, the difficulty should be somewhere between regular IS sets and nationals.

That's not true actually. You will be playing IS-74, which is just another IS set. Also, most state championships except Illinois and Missouri will be playing on set 76, which is also just another IS set, not a special one set aside specifically for anything.

Set 76 is for the most part set aside for state championships, but Illinois is holding its state championship too early.
