Governor's School Academic Competition (GSAC) XV: December 8

Post by gsacdirector »

I am proud to announce that the Governor’s School Academic Competition XV (GSAC XV), held at Maggie Walker Governor's School in Richmond, VA, is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, 2007. We usually draw a competitive field from the VA/MD/DC/NC area and beyond.

Game format: Each game will consist of 20 pyramidal tossups with unrelated 30-point bonuses in an un-timed format. Teams get 10 points for answering tossups correctly and lose 5 points for answering incorrectly before the question is completed (no powers). There are bouncebacks on tossups but not on bonuses.

Tournament format: Teams will be divided into brackets (size depending on the total number of teams), and each team will play at least 6 preliminary rounds. The top 16 teams, ranked by wins and points, will advance to a single-elimination playoff. After the first playoff round, the final 8 will continue playing until the top 8 seeds are determined. Also, if enough teams beyond the top 16 remain, there will be single-elimination consolation playoffs with teams ranked by wins and points. Depending on staff availability, scrimmage matches for interested teams may be available throughout playoffs.

Questions: All questions are written by members of the Maggie Walker Academic Team. We recognize that our questions have been difficult in the past and have tried to make each preliminary round tossup gettable by at least one average player on either team by the end of the question. Playoff questions will be a bit harder, though the majority will still be gettable by average level players. All questions will be available for sale to both participating and non-participating teams.

Schedule: Registration will take place between 8:00am and 8:45am. After an overall team meeting, rounds will begin by 9:15am, and playoffs should be completed by 6:00pm with a lunch break in the middle of the day. There are many lunch options available in the Richmond city area, though you will be able to order pizza through us as well.

Deadlines: The early registration deadline is November 5, 2007 (for a discount). We will continue to accept registrations until December 3, 2007.

Costs:
$50 for the first team from each school
$40 for subsequent teams (no limit on number of teams from same school)
$20 for a copy of the questions for participating teams, $25 for non-participating teams
-$10 per working buzzer system
-$5 for registering prior to November 5, 2007
-$5 off of question fees for purchasing an electronic copy of questions

Awards: Trophies or plaques will be awarded to the top two teams and the consolation winner. Prizes will also be awarded to the highest individual scorers in preliminary rounds and to the player(s) with the most negs in preliminary rounds.

National tournament qualification: Pending affiliation, the top 4 teams will receive bids to the 11th Annual National Scholastics Championship (NSC), hosted by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE).

I will be sending out invitations and registration forms, via e-mail, to all coaches on my mailing list. If you don’t believe you are on this list and would like to be added, send me an e-mail at gsacdirector-at-gmail-dot-com. The invitation and registration form are also posted on our website at http://www.geocities.com/mlwgsbob. If you have any questions or comments, post them in this thread or send me an e-mail. [email protected]

Thanks so much!

Will a trophy be given for the first team who can understand the pairing and room listing matrix?

Oh you're HILARIOUS. a hoot.
Edit: It was much nicer when teams didn't drop out 12 hours before. Anyway, I didn't think it was THAT confusing and only a couple of teams couldn't find their way...

I suspect wowitsquinthaha is wondering if there will be qualification for the HSNCT from this tournament.

How is that even possible without, you know, NAQT questions? Or maybe he was referring to NAQT HSNCT's pairing and room listing matrix??? lol quint...

We did figure it out, and it was a snap after that. The tournament's worth the trouble.

We wish we could come back. We had a lot of fun last year. The tournament was well-run and had very good questions.

Unfortunately, we had to move our own tournament at Chattahoochee to this same weekend, December 8th. Good luck this year! Maybe we can make it back up next time.

Anant isn't on AIM so I figure I'll post here:

There is a relatively high chance TJ might not send any teams due to a lack of sponsors (kids need to write essays to go to college !!)

If we do manage to find one, which is looking unlikely at the moment, we would only be able to field three teams. Also, our A team would be missing Phil, Keshav, and Naren. Just for uh, bracketing purposes.

Sorry about this, but I guess when a team is mostly seniors things like this should have been expected.

Wow. Your team really is discombobulated this year.

Why do people keep using procrastination of item A as an excuse for not doing item B? Or when it comes to college essays, is it that everyone has a severe case of writer's block? Many of our question writers also had this disease.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. Please let us know what you are doing as soon as possible, as the bracketing and scheduling is already hard enough. Also keep us informed on how many buzzers you would bring as we are dangerously short.

Actually 3 teams would be perfect (for now) as it would give us 48, a nice number.

Idea for college essay: Talk about how your team is without a sponsor and how someone had to step up, silbermanian style, to lead your team out of chaos. Perhaps you could make literary references to Lord of the Flies or pop culture references to Kid Nation.

Seriously, though, I do hope your team gets its act together soon. You have an excellent chance to win it all this year.

As long as I don't have to drive the bus.

I am sure there are some odd forms that have to be signed about me being official chaperone. Otherwise, I'm certainly getting to know a few teachers at TJ... but I still am not sure they trust me yet.

We have in fact resolved our sponsor issue and will be bringing three teams, although our A team will be down its three best players.

EDIT: we will probably also bring one buzzer system.

So it's probably really more like TJ B, C, and D rather than A, B, and C in attendance? I'll be sure to note that.

Sorry for the stats delay. This was my fault for not getting the stats on my flash drive the night of the tournament. We have most of them up on this page now.

Particularly, I don't yet have the information about 5th through 8th place. Anant probably has this though.

EDIT: As you probably already know, Geocities sucks. So if you get a data transfer exceeded page, try the next hour.
