Post by vig180 »

The University of Georgia Quizbowl Club is pleased to announce the Second Annual Classic City Classic, to be held on the campus of the University of Georgia in the journalism building on the previously-announced date of December 1, 2007.

This tournament will use NAQT IS-70 and is an untimed "Official NAQT Event" open to all interested high school teams. The top 15% of competing teams will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in May.

Costs:

$70 for each team

$-5 for each working buzzer system (up to 2)

$-5 for a competent worker (up to 1)

$55 for each additional team a school brings

Travel discounts for teams from 200+ miles (one way) are negotiable.

We will also be selling lunches for $5 each, with a choice of pizza or sub, chips, and drink.

Contact:

To register, please send an e-mail to [email protected] with your school's name, contact information, and number of teams. Please include, if applicable, the number of buzzers you will be bringing or if you intend to bring a worker. If you have any questions, please send them to that address as well.

If enough teams indicate interest, we will look into reserving a block of hotel rooms for those wanting to stay overnight.

Updates and further information (directions, lodging, etc.) can be found on our team website, http://www.uga.edu/quizbowl.

Brief results after 7 prelim rounds and a top 8 playoff (yet still done by 4):
1. Dorman A (50+ powers in 7 prelim rounds; 4-1 P/N ratio)
2. Dorman B
3. Walton (by default over 4. Brookwood)

By virtue of finishing in the top 15% (rounded up), Dorman A, Dorman B, and Walton all qualify for the 2008 HSNCT.

Other playoff teams:
Chattahoochee A and B, Bleckley County, Duluth

Full results, including individual stats, will be posted soon. Congrats to all teams who came out and we look forward to seeing everyone at our spring tournament, tentatively scheduled for March 1st.

Walton

Post by CloudsDiffered »

Dorman was there in full force and played to the level they're known for. Chattahoochee was impressive for most of the tournament but got tripped up. Brookwood played solid matches. But the surprise was Walton. Looks like Walton may be back! It looked like they didn't even have their full team but they played a smart game. The Georgia state tournament will be an interesting competition after all! Good tournament overall except it dragged on after a while and fell far behind schedule. Timed rounds or fewer rounds would have helped.

We promised teams that we'd be done by 5 and had the championship match end just after 4, so we finished well ahead of schedule. Each prelim round was an average of 30 minutes, which I think is definitely above-average for tournaments who use 20 questions, read all 3 parts of the bonuses, and keep individual stats. Yes, we had 7 prelim rounds (due to a bunch of last-minute drops that was the best number for us this time), but I always thought teams, especially those who might not make the playoffs, would enjoy playing more quizbowl rather than less.

Timed rounds have generally been opposed by most teams/coaches in our area (and many outside of it); in fact, I think I'm one of the few people who doesn't work for NAQT who actually favors them. So that's not really an option.

We can certainly offer fewer rounds in the future if that's what teams prefer, but like Chris, I thought the preference would be for more games rather than fewer.

While I thank CloudsDiffered for the compliment, I can say that our team (Chatt A) thought we definitely underperformed. This was the result of a combo of “bad dayâ€
