DATE CHANGE:Prison Bowl I @ Hunter Coll HS, NY, NY (1/19/08)

Post by Sir Thopas »

Hunter (known to its students as the Brick Prison, so don't be scared off by the name) will be holding its first annual (hopefully) tournament on January 19, 2008. The location is right in the middle of Manhattan, so it's a good opportunity who'd like to check out the city in addition to quizzin' the bowl.

The tournament format will be a modified ACF format. Simply put, that means there will be 20 tossups, and each correct tossup will earn a team the chance to answer bonus questions. Each tossup will be worth 10 points, and 15 if gotten sufficiently early (aka "powers"). If a team buzzes in before the question is totally read and incorrectly answers, they will lose 5 points. Each bonus will be worth a total 30 points, and will be non-rebounding. The questions are being cowritten by the North Kansas City HS and Hunter College HS teams. The co-editors are Charlie Dees and I. The questions are adhering to solid ACF principles of writing and Jerry Vinokurov's awesome guide.

The prelims will be swiss paired, and the playoffs will be done in a way such that anyone who loses in the first round will get to play other games, either double elimination or some round-robin setup, we'll have to see. In either case, we shall be taking advantage of the school's networking and Smartboard setup, so expect much less latency and human error than usually occurs, to the best of our abilities.

Dr. Chuck approving, this will hopefully be a PACE qualifier.

Pricing system is as follows:
$70 for a school's first team, $60 for other teams thereafter
-$10 for buzzers
-$10 for travelling >200 miles (as determined by Google Maps)

The cap will probably be around 40 teams, but we'll have a more exact number when/if we approach that number.

Pardon me for being sarcastic, but you're holding your tournament on a Monday?

EDIT: I just noticed that the title date and date listed are different...

Barring some unforseen circumstances, Ward Melville High School would like to bring (at least) 1 team this January.

What will be the costs associated with the tournament?

Thanks, and we look forward to attending.

In all likelihood, we'll be there. How can I (we) get from Penn Station to HCHS. I think you guys are closest to the 96th street Station on the Green line?

Thanks,

You would have to get off at the 96th Street station for the 6 train. Detailed directions here: http://www.hopstop.com/?action=route_pr ... agv5hqkhg7

*shrug* At a reasonable time, depending on where people are coming from and stuff. We haven't decided yet.

We're considering moving this up a week because 1/26 is an SAT date. Thoughts?

In any case, I should be sending out the mass email within the next couple of days, because I've been putting it off for no real reason lol.

RM is more likely to come on 1/26. I wouldn't be able to come on the 19th, personally, and I'm not sure that we would send a team.

Either way, New York is three and a half hours away, so don't plan the tournament around our attendance.

OK, so it looks like we're leaning toward moving it up a week. I'll make the official announcement tomorrow either way.

E. O. Smith (Storrs CT) would like to send some teams but wouldn't be able to make 1/19 (middle of semester exams). At any rate, can you give us a contact for your coach, or are you the coach? Thanks

* Gonzaga
* Half Hollow Hills West × 2 (still awaiting confirmation . . .)
* St. Peter's × 2

The check can be made out to Hunter College High School; I'll send out an email with Subway, etc. directions to all teams tomorrow.

Yeah, that link is correct.

Thanks everyone for coming, and for bearing with us when things got rough, although I'd like to think that things picked up more later in the day, and that the questions were good.

I'll provide more detailed stuff tomorrow, assuming I can find the playoff scores (I think I have most of them somewhere). That link is just prelim stats.

Whoops, yeah, I forgot to email you back about that.

It worked like a dream, making it really easy to compile and look at the stats. A++ would buy from again.

Also: if you could somehow make it do Swiss pairing, it would make things just that much easier. If not maybe I could get my tech people to work no a localized program for next year, because saving that five minutes would save some chance for things to go wrong. Other than that, awesome.

The fact that he got 17 negs in a five-round tournament doesn't bode well for his survival then (extending this to a 10-round prelim like NAQT nationals, he'll have 34 negs!)

(2) Gonzaga def. (3) Bergen A

THIRD PLACE GAME

if i can help you out

i think we lost to gonzaga 440-150 or something (mainly due to six straight negs from watson and i....it was painful)

we beat hhw a 450 115 or something like that (mainly due to watson alone having 145 points on tossups...it was painful, but only for the other team :grin: )
