Panasonic Results

Post by Byko »

Greetings from Orlando!

Much to my surprise, we have a computer with internet access in our room that apparently doesn't cost anything. So, it looks like I might be able to offer up some updates after all.

Super!

I've been searching for a PAC "news" source, as there is zero reporting here.

They will post results here, though I won't be surprised if Byko beats them to it.

Yeah, we got that nice surprise at CAC as well. The front desk didn't even realize what was going on, as they told us we'd have to pay. You can unplug the ethernet and plug into your own laptop, but wireless is NOT free. They made quite an upgrade to the garden wing rooms!

I am just gald to report that I was able to ride Coach Bykowski's shirt tails to a respectful second place in the coaches challenge.

I've only done CAC, and apparently they don't have this there. Basically a match amongst coaches?

MrSchnippert- that's a great idea! We need to have a coaches challenge at CAC. It's basically an opportunity to be on the other side of the buzzers, so to speak. At PAC, the idea is to help familiarize coaches with the unfamiliar format-- but it's a lot of fun and a great way to meet people.

By the way, Team 3 (Maryland, Wyoming, Florida, and West Virginia coaches) might have come in second if we could have figured out whether or not to include cotton in "naval stores". The "gun cotton debate" took too long. Oh, well, a good time was had by all and I wnt back to my room singing Weird Al's "I Lost on Jeopardy". And we got a lovely consolation prize.

The PAC link is not working right now because for some reason the entire Polk County Schools' website is kaput. Stay tuned for an update on its availability-- but I'm betting that we will have to count on folks here to provide "fair and balanced " reports. I nominate Shepherd Smith Bykowski to do the updates from the front.

I wish I could join you next year. I competed twice as a student, and this was my second year coaching, but I am not allowed to coach Team Duval anymore since I moved to a private school. Actually, I am allowed, if I pay my own way.

We're here, I forgot byko was coming.... we're resting up for our matchup with the crazy PAC format.

We got here too late to register though, so apparently I have to get up in the morning and do it then.

The registration desk is in the convention center- on the main level. You'll go through the main lobby of the hotel and go out the side door to the convention center. Once inside, you will turn right and see a rotunda -type area at the end of the hall. Registration is just before that area, on your right. I believe they hung a big Panasonic banner this afternoon.. you can't miss it!

Most likely it would be NCSSM, but I would be surprised it if wasn't them. Technically I'm still listed as the contact.

Also, Oklahoma won their room (over California) on the last question, both scoring over 320 points, though only three teams were in that room.

As to the IL/DC/ME/NM room, DC buzzed in a lot, but negged about as much. The other two teams were rather quiet.

The match is still going on, but after the 5-point round with DE/PA/MO/TX, Missouri had a 9-point lead over Texas, who were surprisingly (at least to me) good. Missouri was buzzing in very aggressively and negging a fair amount, while Texas had no negs. The other two teams were, again, rather quiet.

Alabama 156
Mississippi 117

Now that I've gotten the shock of my life from the insanity that is PAC format... hopefully we can put up higher points in the semis... off to Disney if the thunderstorm rolls out finally.

Who is representing New Jersey? Many of the top teams in the state chose to boycott the State Championship because it was rescheduled for the same day as a local tournament. I was just wondering.

I was confused about that too, so I looked it up... Southern Cal is a JR-SR high school located in Lake City, IA. It has an astounding 307 students.

For the sake of hardeecoach and the rest of us from CAC... Go Team Florida! I didn't see any D2 or D3 matches, but your kids from Polk were sick in the finals at CAC. They must have gotten 8 or 9 out of the last ten 15-pt round questions.

Semifinals:

Oklahoma 164
Illinois 253
Maryland 79
Montana 126
Florida 301

Ohio 184
Kentucky 268
New Jersey 142
California 193
Idaho 41

Tennessee 201
Missouri 224
District of Columbia 226
Vermont 128

(Semifinal #3 does NOT have the corrected final scores as of right now. D.C. actually was first and Missouri was second, but I don't have the revised totals.)

Finals:

Florida 210
Kentucky 91
District of Columbia 148
Illinois 252
California 188
Missouri 240

Congratulations to Illinois on their performance--they were a consistently very strong team, particularly on math and science, throughout the entire tournament. I know David Riley will be very happy about this one.

Good job Team Florida! 4th, 2nd, and 3rd place over the last three years of PAC...perhaps next year will be the year we bring the title back home!

And congrats to Illinois and Missouri!
