IMHO, no surprises other than DCC not making the playoffs. I was sort of expecting them to make it over WJ after their 8th-place finish at NAQT, but I know from personal experience that WJ is a really strong team and they are capable of beating anyone in a given game.

What I didn't mention: everyone starts over fresh with 0-0 records. Now the game is to finish in the top 2 in the championship playoff group to participate in the single elimination final.

Consolation: That is quite possibly the greatest system of naming brackets that we'll ever see. Who came up with that?
Looks like Stuyvestant will get another chance to show their stuff after they maybe didn't live up to their potential at NAQT. Maybe they'll do a repeat of their win over MW like at TJIAT. I imagine plenty of their success here may stem from both bouncebacks and the lack of a 5 point penalty, as they are notorious for both extremely high bonus conversion and negging rates.
Is the number after the bracket name the placement? If so, glad to see MW B is still doing well, just missing playoffs. I figured they would, especially since a lot of my strengths are missing in the PACE distribution, and we brought someone up who probably is doing better than I would have.
Also congratulations to a young MW C team, who is holding its own. Looking forward to the final results when I land on the ground tomorrow.

In the consolation division names, you see the original bracket and their placements in each foursome. As for naming the brackets, let's just say it was inspiration.

I just got a phone call from a friend of mine to tell me MW beat MLK in the finals by a large margin, something like 350 points.
Other than that, no other results really.

Congrats to Gov and MLK. They were both extremely impressive.
The tournament was great. Of course, the questions were good, but moreover, I loved the moderators. I think they were the best group of readers I've ever had.
The greatest part of the trip, though, was playing Super Smash Brothers with the team until 2:00 the day before playoffs. It was fun.

Question: Do people think if State College had gone with their full A team that they would have gotten 2nd?

Congratulations to MLWGS on another well-earned national championship title. They were excellent all weekend long, perhaps most impressively in that final game.
I think it's entirely possible. When we've played them and seen them play, Barry and Francois seemed to be great at history and science, respectively. Not that Molly and Catherine weren't good, but having two specialists of that caliber in addition to Laura and Allison might have put them over the top.charlieDfromNKC wrote:Question: Do people think if State College had gone with their full A team that they would have gotten 2nd?

Sweet, I'm a history specialist. I always thought of myself as more of a bad generalist, getting random questions here and there, but whatever...dyetman89 wrote:I think it's entirely possible. The four girls on A for PACE contained most of the SC Lit knowledge but not as much science/math or geography, I think. However, given that PACE is a lot more academic and lit heavy compared to NAQT, I think our comtributions would not be as much should we have attended NSC. My best estimate: We might make it to the semifinals. Of course, it all depends on the questions.
It's funny, Francois and I are stuck at George Mason University at a science camp, while Dr. Chuck and PACE are in Michigan. Maybe I'll get to see ETC at GMU in my last few days...
Congradulations to Maggie Walker Gov School. Winning both PACE and NAQT puts them at the top of current and past quizbowl teams, alongside TJ 2005. I know that I speak for our entire team when I say it has been a pleasure to compete with you guys.

I'm guessing you're here for bio camp? Hmm...
Well, I tend to be around my offices between S&T1 and the JC on the second floor. The JC though (245) is much nicer than my office.

For those interested, my photos from the NSC are now posted to Flickr.
(Unless there's a way I can upload photos to Facebook en masse, a Facebook appearance of these will come a bit more gradually.)
Congratulations to all participating teams this weekend!

Likewise, I missed PACE for a math camp. :P However, I'm in Nebraska, so not much in way of location humor. Actually, Nebraska just kind of stinks in general.
Hooray for MW A winning and avenging their only HSNCT loss in this year's PAC finals. Also good job to MW B for coming from behind as a #7 to get second in the consolation playoffs, also avenging an HSNCT loss to Brindlee Mountain B in the process.

I just wanted to express my appreciation to the PACE staff for another excellent NSC. The teams were worthy competitors. The questions were well-written and perhaps the most challenging ever. The atmosphere was casual and fun. The location was nice. The 1500 miles on the road in that minibus was grueling, but the victory made it a lot less grueling than it might have been. I look forward to the 2008 edition at George Mason.
A special congratulations goes out to Stuyvesant as the only team to beat us twice this year. In fact we were 0-2 against them (though we did manage to eke out a victory in the mini-match.) Stuyvesant seemed to raise their game to a higher level when they played us. NICE JOB!
