Generally Thursday night/Friday morning, but I think I've seen them up as early as Thursday afternoon before.

This is why we don't do KMO anymore. . .by the time the "committee" agrees on an answer, you earn the bare minimum of points.

Our reason for not doing KMO this time is that the coach (me) freakin' forgot about it.

TJ got 1765. Has anyone else noticed that the geoscience questions in this thing are unusually obscure, compared to the general level of difficulty? Every year there is a glacier related question that we totally fail on.

Winnebago's former F/S head coach - current V assistant coach is a geoscience college professor, and he's said the same things at tons of KMOs.

Yeah, the question about detritus where the answer was some hill/valley/slope I had never heard about comes to mind.

There are definatly some tough earth sci questions, though our school does well in that area because most of the Science Olympiad team is with us and we have 4 earth science electives.

Anyone thinking that one of the KMO writers has a Ph.D in Earth Science with a minor in random outlaws?

But I have to defend glaciers here. They're giant pieces of ice moving 2 meters a year like a extremely vicious river. They give birth to baby glaciers through through calving. They're (not to be aukish) cool.

Interesting results. I was told that we got a rather distant 4th place on the phone and that a team from New York won the whole thing with a score in the 1800s. It looks like I was right to be skeptical; only the "rather distant" part was right. Does anyone know the story there? I do not want to stir up anything, but I have always wondered how the KMO can "look into" possible cheating and how often it happens.

When a who-dat school jumps right in at #1, skepticism is in order. I wonder how that played out?

The 5 letter code given after the competition contains the score as was on the computer. If the score that the code sends and the score that the school sends does not match, the result is not counted.

But if they just used google or something, I have no idea how the KM people would know that.

I think he's talking about whatever team is referred to by this:

rather than accusing noted school that has been a quizbowl (and quizbowl-like activities) powerhouse for, like, decades State College of being a "who-dat school."

I agree with the overabundance of difficult Earth Sci questions. Also random outlaws and Mexican War generals.

Having had to have beaten SC in the PACE quarters last year after losing to them in the Saturday rounds, in no way do I mean THEY are the Who-dat school. This mysterious NY school that was #1 in the early KMO list and finally disappeared--that's where Lucy has some 'splaining to do.

Googling might help get you 1804 (the purported score was something like that), but I don't know how much it could really add. You'd still have to know something to build a base and then Google the ones you absolutely don't know.

I think if OJ rigged his KMO score, he'd do it a different way. I'm sure we've all thought of how people might do it, you know, just for recreational sake, so THERE'S NO NEED TO ELABORATE ON METHODS OF CHEATING ON THE KMO HERE. But in the abstract, I think there would be more effective ways of creating the score you want.

NKC doesn't do KMO, but I still think it's cool that a Missouri team has been top 10 for the past two times.
