Tar Heel Cup (9 November 2024)

Post by bkmcavoybickford »

The UNC Quiz Bowl team would like to invite all high school teams to the 2024 Tar Heel Cup, which will take place on our campus on 9 November, 2024. Benjamin McAvoy-Bickford and Diego Miguel Almaraz-Pérez will be the Tournament Directors.

We will have two divisions, Junior Varsity and Varsity. The Varsity division is for more experienced teams; for teams that play the NCASA quiz bowl competitions, this roughly means teams that expect to qualify for the state tournament from the regional tournament, or B teams of a similar caliber. The Junior Varsity division is meant for teams that are new to quiz bowl or do not expect to advance past the NCASA regional competitions. We reserve the right to move teams between divisions if necessary, and can also advise teams if they are unsure of which division is appropriate for them. Middle school teams may also sign up for the Varsity division; they may also be allowed in Junior Varsity, but we need to clear that with the SEDNA people first.

The Varsity division will use CALISTO, a set produced by a coalition of quiz bowl players from the state of California. The set for the Junior Varsity division is likely to be SEDNA, but we’re still waiting for official confirmation from the SEDNA team on that. If one division does not have enough teams signed up, we will merge it into the larger division and use the set of the larger division.

There will be an opening meeting at 8:45 a.m.; gameplay will begin at 9:00. We will aim to finish around 5:00 p.m., which means there will likely be about ten rounds. Room reservations have not yet been finalized, but we expect to hold this tournament in Dey Hall.

We will use the rules of quiz bowl as explained at these rules . Specifically, our format has 15 points for a power, 10 for a correct answer, and -5 for an incorrect penalty. Players have five seconds to answer after buzzing in and to buzz after the end of a question, and teams have five seconds to confer on bonuses. Four players play at a time, and there may be a maximum of eight players on a team. Each team has one time out available. Substitutions can be made at half time and time outs, but no player who has been substituted out of a match can be substituted back in in that same match.

The field cap for each division is twelve teams right now. Please send an e-mail to [email protected] for the purposes of registering for the tournament. The field will be updated on this post. Logistics information (parking, game rooms, schedules, etc.) will be sent out closer to the date.

The fee will be $65 per team. There are the following discounts:
-$5 for a buzzer set
-$10 for a staffer who is capable of either reading or scorekeeping at a reasonable pace
The minimum fee is $40. Invoices are available if teams request one. The fee can be payable through a check to UNC Chapel Hill Academic Team or cash. If those do not work for your team, reach out to us and we can provide Venmo or Paypal information privately. Teams for which this cost represents a substantial obstacle to participation are welcome to reach out to the quiz bowl team to see if we can offer assistance.

UNC Quiz Bowl does not tolerate misconduct or hateful behavior at our tournaments. Tinyurl.com/uncqbreport provides a place for people to report incidents of misconduct. In addition, please report any incidents at the tournament directly to a staffer, so we can handle it promptly. Thank you for your coöperation in this endeavor.

For right now, there are five more spots left in the field. Past that, we'll be putting teams on a waitlist; expansion is possible but far from guaranteed. Thanks for signing up!

Looking forward to this tournament! All teams should have received an e-mail already about logistic information, and a schedule will be sent Friday. Let me know if you did not receive an e-mail. It's not too late to sign up!
