Hinsdale Varsity Academic Competition (SHOW-M3 @ Hinsdale, IL, 10/05/2024)

Post by mtaylor »

The Hinsdale Central and Walter Payton Scholastic Bowl Teams are pleased to announce the Hinsdale Varsity Academic Competition (“HVAC”), to be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024. The tournament will be at Hinsdale Central High School (5500 S. Grant St, Hinsdale, IL 60521).

This tournament will be run jointly by myself, Mark Taylor, and Coach Alan McCloud of Hinsdale Central. Coach McCloud will be primarily in charge of all hosting/logistical matters, including payments for entry fees. I will be primarily in charge of Tournament Director duties for the competition. For any questions, we encourage you to reach out to both of us via email:
mtaylor141 [at] cps [dot] edu
amccloud [at] hinsdale86 [dot] org

To register for the tournament, coaches may either email both of us, and/or use this Google Form. We will reach out to coaches via email as confirmation.

To sign up as a staffer for the tournament, please use this Google Form. Staffers will be paid and receive lunch!

We are excited to use the SHOW-M3 question set. This is a regular-difficulty question set and should be appropriate for high school varsity teams of all skill levels. More information about the set can be found here.

The tournament will use mACF rules. Teams will compete 4-on-4 with a strict maximum of 6 players per team roster. There will be both powers and negs on tossups, and there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. Tied matches will use sudden death overtime. We plan to guarantee all teams between 9-11 matches.

Depending on the overall field of teams who sign up, the tournament will have either one or two divisions (most likely two); this will be determined and announced closer to the tournament date.
In the case of a two-division tournament, the "Highly-Competitive Division" will be intended for teams who expect to qualify for (and/or attend) Nationals this year, and/or teams with multiple players with prior Nationals experience, and/or teams who expect to be "state contenders". We expect that this tournament will be a PACE NSC Qualifier; only the teams who play in this division will be eligible to qualify for NSC.
The "Challenge Division" will be intended as an opportunity for all other teams to jumpstart your season and play a full day against other teams of relatively similar skill level. We hope for this division to include a significant number of "A" teams.

When you sign up we ask that you indicate a preferred division for each team, assuming you already know. If you are not sure yet, we can follow up with you after the start of next school year.

We are tentatively capping the total field size at 36 teams. Depending on staffer availability we might be able to expand this number slightly.

We also hope to provide the varsity ("A") teams from as many schools as possible with the opportunity to compete in this event.
Through August 31: We are limiting signups to 2 teams per school ("A" and "B"). You are welcome to sign up for more than 2 teams, but your C team and beyond will be placed on a waitlist.
Beginning September 1: We will open up registration to all teams. Also on September 1 we will immediately admit waitlisted teams to available spots in the field, starting with all waitlisted C Teams in order of signup, followed by waitlisted D Teams.
If the field has reached its cap and we choose to expand it, first priority will be given to any A/B teams on the waitlist.

The entry fee is $90/team. This does not include lunch. There is no buzzer discount but teams are expected to bring a working buzzer system. We might provide a discount (TBD) for teams who provide a qualified, experienced staffer, as approved by the TD.

Registration will be considered final on the Sunday before the tournament, September 29. Cancellations after 11:59 PM on September 28 must pay the full cost of their entry fees.

Checks should be made payable to Hinsdale Central High School. Please include "Scholastic Bowl" in the memo line. Please mail checks to:

All forms of misconduct, including but not limited to harassment and cheating, will not be tolerated at this tournament. All players, coaches, and spectators will be held to the PACE code of conduct. Any incidents should be immediately reported to the Tournament Directors and/or to the anonymous misconduct form.

Please let myself and Coach McCloud know if you have any questions. We look forward to hosting a bunch of quizbowl fans for the coolest event of the year, as you warm up for your 2024-25 season!
