Viking Invitational I @ La Jolla HS (4/20/2024)

Post by jebjab »

La Jolla Quizbowl is excited to announce our inaugural Viking Invitational, to be held on April 20th, 2024 in-person at La Jolla High School. The tournament will be supervised by teacher advisor Ms. Rachel Lobato.

The tournament directors for the 2024 Viking Invitational will be David Abell, Elena Grilli, and Zac Schmidt.

QUESTION SETS:

The tournament will have two divisions, a varsity and junior varsity division.

Varsity and junior varsity will be run on NAQT sets IS-222 and IS-229A, respectively.

LOCATION:

This tournament will take place at La Jolla High School. The school’s address is 750 Nautilus St, San Diego, CA 92037. A map of the campus can be found here.

DATE:

The tournament will be taking place on April 20th, 2024. Check-in will open at 8:20 AM, and matches will begin at around 9:00 AM. The tournament will likely end between 5:00 and 6:00 PM.

REGISTRATION:

For registration, we will be using the NAQT registration system. To register, use this link. To request an invoice, use the NAQT system or email [email protected]

Registration will be open until April 18, 2024. Teams registered after this date will have to pay a late fee according to the discretion of the tournament directors. Any teams that wish to drop less than 24 hours before the start of the tournament must pay their entire assigned fee.

There will be a soft field cap of 12 teams for junior varsity and 12 teams for varsity, though this can potentially be adjusted based on staffing constraints and interest.

Each team is allowed a maximum of 6 registered players. Only 4 players can play at one time, though substitutions can be made at halftime.

ELIGIBILITY:

The varsity division will be open to any high school teams.

For junior varsity, all registered members of a team must adhere to the following constraints: Students must not have scored 50+ ppg at a junior varsity/novice tournament, 30+ ppg at a varsity/HS-regs tournament, or 10+ ppg at a national-level tournament.

Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Middle school teams are highly recommended to play in junior varsity, though ambitious middle school teams are permitted to participate in varsity.

FOOD:

There are several restaurants within the vicinity of La Jolla High. Within a 15-minute walk from the school, food options include Rigoberto's, the Taco Stand, Pizza on Pearl, and Mandarin House.

PRICING:

$80 per team
-$10 per competent staffer who brings their own device capable of editing Google Sheets
-$5 per provided buzzer system (must have at least 4 buzzers working on each side)
-$40 for any team composed entirely of students that have never competed in a pyramidal quiz bowl tournament
-$5 per 50 miles traveled one-way per Google Maps
Minimum fee: $40

FORMAT:

The exact bracket structures will depend on the number of teams that register. Most likely, each division will be formatted as a double round-robin with rebracketing after the first half.

We will be using NAQT rules, with the exception that matches will be run as two untimed halves with 10 questions each. ACF timing rules will be used (5/5/5). Computational math questions will be skipped.

If there are not enough buzzer systems, rounds may be run using buzzin.live. If this occurs, participants will be required to wait to be recognized before answering the question.

MISCONDUCT:

All participants will be required to adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Any reports of cheating or harassment can be reported to staff immediately or submitted to the following anonymous report form

Any additional inquiries can be directed to [email protected]
