We are seeking writers and editors through an open application; high schoolers and less-experienced writers are encouraged to apply. You do not need to be affiliated with California to apply, although we may choose in cases to slightly prefer newer writers or those from California.
We will be accepting editors and writers on a rolling basis: that is to say, there is no deadline for applications, and we’ll evaluate and accept applications as we receive them. We’ll update this post when all slots are filled.
Applying to Edit
We are looking for editors in the following categories:
Literature
Chemistry
Physics
Other Science
Visual Arts
Auditory Arts
Mythology
All applicants must submit a writing sample of questions in the category or categories you’re applying for. You must submit at least 3/3 (that is, three tossups and three bonuses) total, and at least 2/2 from each category applied for. Tossups should be powermarked. Aim for length limits of six lines in 10-point Times New Roman for tossups, and two lines per part for bonuses. In evaluating your submissions, we will be primarily looking for evocative and interesting clues, accurate estimation of difficulty, and clear, concise prose. The writing sample should consist of new questions written specifically for the application; do not submit old questions that you wrote for other sets, or questions that anybody else has seen. To submit, email me at [email protected] or message me on Discord (_alistair_).
Editors should also inform us of the amount of the set they’re able to edit, as well as any other editing preferences (e.g. “only comfortable editing American history”); we anticipate having the flexibility to accommodate subspecialities. Editors are also invited, although this is strictly optional and will not be used to judge applications, to submit a statement on their vision for their categories.
Applying to Write
Applicants to write must submit a writing sample of at least 1/1 (that is, one tossup and one bonus) -- these should be new questions written specifically for the application. Do not submit questions that you wrote for other sets or that anyone else has seen. To submit, email me at [email protected] or message me on Discord (_alistair_).
